Trang Airport has opened its new domestic passenger terminal following construction setbacks that lasted over four years. The project, costing 1.07 billion baht, experienced delays when the initial contractor abandoned the work. Director-General of the Department of Airports, Danai Ruengsorn, announced that the terminal began operations on September 5.

Before the opening, a simulation with 50 trial passengers was conducted to ensure service readiness. Adjustments were made to the systems including utilities, security, and other passenger services, aligning the operations with international standards. The new terminal, covering over 30,000 sq m, has doubled the airport's capacity, now handling 1,200 passengers per hour or 3.4 million annually.

Parking facilities have been expanded to accommodate 700 vehicles. Further enhancements include runway extensions from 2,100m to 2,990m and the installation of new electrical systems, projected to cost 1.775 billion baht. These upgrades, scheduled for completion in 2028, will enable the airport to handle wide-body aircraft, opening possibilities for direct long-haul flights to destinations in Europe and other parts of Asia.

Trang Airport's director, Surirat Thipyotha, confirmed significant progress despite earlier setbacks with the contractor. Currently, the airport serves three airlines: Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air, facilitating approximately 10 daily flights and accommodating 1,500 to 1,600 passengers each day.

The expansion is set to boost the region's connectivity and economic growth by attracting more flights and passengers. The improved facilities are expected to enhance the overall travel experience and provide more convenient options for both locals and tourists.

Key Takeaways

  • Trang Airport's new terminal doubles capacity to handle 3.4 million passengers yearly.
  • Runway expansion set to complete by 2028 will enable direct long-haul flights.
  • Currently, the airport services ten daily flights with three airlines operating.
