Authorities have apprehended a man involved in a brutal knife attack that left a 14-year-old girl with a severed hand in Chiang Mai. The suspect, identified as Jai Ai Mong, or “M,” aged 20, was captured at the Mae Tha drug checkpoint in Lamphun while attempting to flee to Bangkok. Two other victims were also injured during the incident and police are continuing to pursue other members of the gang.

The attack occurred when Mong and an estimated 20 associates, part of a larger Tai Yai gang (ethnic Shan), used a “sparta” knife(machete) to assault the victims. According to CCTV footage, the suspects ignored the victims’ pleas that they were not involved, striking the girl twice. Mong reportedly claimed he mistook the girl, who was wearing a hood, for a male rival and admitted to targeting the wrong person.

Mong has a prior record for similar knife attacks on rivals, having been arrested previously in March 2025. He faces charges including causing grievous bodily harm, conspiracy involving five or more people and carrying a weapon in public without permission. Authorities have released video of his arrest to aid the ongoing investigation into the gang’s activities.

The incident has raised concerns about youth safety and gang-related violence in northern Thailand. Police are urging residents to report suspicious activity and are continuing surveillance to apprehend remaining suspects. The case has highlighted the need for coordination between provincial police, investigative units and local communities to prevent repeat offences.

Further legal proceedings will focus on prosecuting Mong and other gang members involved. Police have indicated that they are expanding the investigation to ensure all accomplices are held accountable. The pursuit of the remaining suspects is ongoing, with authorities maintaining checkpoints and monitoring potential escape routes.

Am I wrong to say this POS should be hacked up with a machete, then have his carcass thrown into the jungle?
