What was life like when you were 48?

Featured Replies

How did life feel at that age?

work, health, money, relationships, day to day vibe?

Anything you’d do differently, anything that surprised you, or simple wins that made life easier?

Just your average, honest experiences so I can see if I’m vaguely on the right track. Cheers.

  • That was only 4 years ago for me...   Four years ago, my life here in Thailand began its slow, agonizing collapse. The pandemic, it turns out, was just the polite introduction. The real clow

  • I would say that at age 48 I was enjoying life the most I had done, up to that point, especially as I had suffered a full on nervous breakdown due to the toxic office environment I had been working in

  • I walk 4km daily. Fixing my diet now. Haven't been drunk in 20 years no smoking cigs for about 10. Recently quit weed. Will be getting into climbing soon. Small first then progress to bigger.

I just got married to my Thai wife, had my own business

That year was wonderful, just retired and moved to Thailand and started to work offshore again freelancing. Life was perfect until February - March 2020, and had to take a decision about go work, or stay in Thailand. Choosed to stay, and had a blast during covid, best time in Thailand ever.

That's the best years ever,

Starting to feel not invincible with my body. Having to watch what I eat now.

Babes still love me though.

I’m feeling it too,  I used to manage a very slow 21 km run, every other day, but lately even 6 km is a struggle. Maybe I’m overdoing it, or it’s time to mix in some strength work at the gym instead of just running.

Hope you’re having a great time with her and enjoying the freedom of not having to run a business anymore?

I loved the COVID years too, business flourished, I was stuck at home in Thailand and totally chilled out, and I even got back into my childhood hobby of building electronic circuits.

No business anymore, I lost everything in Thailand, but we moved back to Oz years ago and have 2 houses now

Absolutely awful. I was in a job I utterly despised (albeit a well paid job). Had a boss who was a complete Ahole. Suffering from a long term chronic illness compounded by stress of said job. Quite possibly the worst time of my life.

If the question had referred to the age of 49 then it would be a very different answer. At the age of 49 I told the boss to poke the job up his ar$e. I retired (had some financial success that year). Managed to get the illness under some degree of control. Probably the best time of my life along with the 2 years I spent living in Thailand during a career break in my early 30's.

That was 8 years ago and never looked back. Best decision I ever made.

I’m so sorry to hear about what happened in Thailand 😪 that’s one of my worst nightmares. I’d always assumed you lived in the Land of Smiles, even though you had two houses in Oz.

I’ve been on a similar path, no cigarettes for about 20 years, no alcohol, and I’ve cut out sugar and sweets for a couple of years. I’ve never tried weed; I was considering a weed cookie but I’m having second thoughts. Climbing sounds awesome, how does someone get started?

I wish I could hike farther, ride longer, and recover faster like I could at 48.

Knowing what I know now, I'd eat better at the age of 48.

I’m really sorry about your boss and the stress, that was my life in UK academia 14 years ago. My so called boss was useless, so I started doing reverse delegation and pushed all the delegated work back to him.

I told him to get stuffed and left for Thailand, brave or maybe reckless, but it worked out. The boss at Citi before that was even worse; I’m still recovering from the stress. Great parties, though!

That’s amazing, what’s the secret to such quick recovery? Is it diet? What was your diet like then versus now? I’m guessing these days it’s lots of protein, some carbs, and healthy oils/fats.

I used to do great 25 km+ hikes in Chiang Mai, haven’t done one in a while. Gorgeous trails behind Doi Suthep Temple, heading to the five-way junction and beyond. We always started early from the bottom at the Wat Pha Lad trailhead.

I got it backwards,  bad wording on my part.   I wish my recovery were like it was before 50.  Someone once said that your body falls apart after 50, and I didn't believe them.  They were correct.  Everything goes harder.

Thanks 😀 looks like I’ll have to go easy on the carbs etc then

I was working in the City. Did 33 years of commuting and working very long hours. Like yourself, some great times partying and nearly always on expenses!

Now I do 2 months Thailand and 2 months UK on a constant rotation. I've got an elderly mother to keep an eye on in the UK hence the coming and going. Once she has popped off I'll make the move permanently to Thailand. I'm not quite sure whether the Mrs wants me in Thailand permanently or is more happy with the current arrangement....

I'm glad things worked out for yourself when you took the plunge.

Wow, that’s a grind. 33 years in the city. I just did 2 year at the Citi bank nearly finished me off. University tenure was a much kinder gig.

I shifted all my lectures to civilised afternoon slots when I was actually awake.

I’m on the road again now, exploring options, very much in the same headspace as you. Not entirely sure the Thai girlfriend wants me there full-time either. Until that’s clear, I’ll just have to endure more time in Bali and similar “hardship” posts. Tough work, but someone's got to do it 🤣

You'll be more peaceful happy and healthy when you're single.

So then...no vices?

Not even the smell of a woman?

Thank GOD you were NOT one of the strawberry tribe who were lecturing me.

We had great lecturers, back in the day, at our school.

Thank GOD we never had lecturers such as you.

What a JOKE you must have been to your students.....

Obviously, you were NEVER a contender for tenure.....

What a JOKE....
