Experience with getting a Non-O e-visa with the LA consulate

A month ago or so I had a question about what to do after retirement, since it is coming up on October 22nd. I was torn between the Non-O and OA.

A fair number of you had replied and the majority said get the non-o.

In case someone is planning on applying for the Non-o from Los Angeles, hopefully this can help.

The application was fairly straight forward, I had to google a few times for clarification of some of the terms. One I remember was port of departure. I wanted to make sure they were talking about the origin, not the last country I had a layover in. If you go through immigration in a layover country, then that would be the port of departure, otherwise, where you had originated  your trip from is the correct answer.

My special circumstance was I had recently moved and almost nothing had my name and new address on it, they had asked for my address and proof.I am staying in my SIL house in Nor Cal until we leave. Luckily, I had changed my Schwab bank over a month ago and the average account balance letter had that on the first line, I used that for the proof of address.

I downloaded 3 months of statements from my brokerage account with Schwab, only used the first page, edited out the first set of account numbers on that, it had my old address, so I edited that out and combined 3 months with 3 pages. If you use the print to pdf function in windows, you can specify which pages you want, I just needed the first page for each of the last 3 months. I used the adobe pdf combine function on the Adobe website for free.

The passport upload was the biggest challenge, you have to get the lighting and contrast right, or the e-visa website will reject it. I went into the bathroom and put a towel over my head and the passport to reduce the light shining on the info page. I used an android camera, that was washed out, kept getting rejected. I have an iphone 13, that worked much better.

After uploading, it couldn't read all the info on the passport to auto fill in. It then instructed me to fill in the info it couldn't see.

The photo taken in the last 6 months was a selfie, just make sure you are looking level or slightly up, no shadows on your face either.

After getting all these items, I submitted at around 12:45 am (I work evenings). I received an email saying they had received the info and I am pending.

11:45 am the same day, I received an email saying it was approved and the attachment was the e-visa. The dates on the visa are for when you can use it. Mine is Sept 24 to Dec 22.

Not as bad as some people online have said, that LA takes 3 weeks to get it back to you. My flight is Nov 5th, so I had plenty of time.

Hope this helps someone else. I will continue to post my experiences in getting a COR and a bank account in Khon Kaen.

On entry, you'll be granted permission of stay for 90 days, so until 2nd February 2026.

In order to obtain a COR from Immigration, a TM30 must first be filed. 'Notification of Aliens residence'.

Do you have anything lined up to rent?

We are going to be staying in my SIL house in the village until our house is built. The SIL is in the US, I had her blue book copied and mailed to us. I will make several copies of that and her Thai ID before we go to Thailand. The SIL isn't going back for a few years.

We won't be paying rent or anything, so i'm not 100% sure how to do that paperwork for immigration. Maybe fill out the TM30 and have her sign that? If anyone knows how to proceed with staying at the families house, i am all ears.

Thanks.

We, as in Thai spouse.
Did you marry in Thailand or the USA?

You as the occupier of the property can complete and file the TM30, attaching signed (by the SIL) copies of her Blue house book and ID card, along with a signed copy of the ID page of your passport

You can view and download the TM30 from here; https://bangkok.immigration.go.th/en/downloads_en/

It should be filed within 24 hours of arriving at the property, so I'd suggest filing it in person the first time.
You can request a COR to open a bank account at the same time.

OP, thanks for posting your experience.  Quick Q for you:

You used brokerage accounts as evidence of your financial means?  I assume so since you mentioned Schwab.   The Thai embassy accepted cash balances in those accounts as proof without issue?

It sounds like you will have the documents available to do the TM30 online.  Set up an account as if you were the SIL and register the address now, then notify your presence when you arrive in Thailand.

Correct, i figured they don't care (or know) what a brokerage account is, vs a checking or savings account. I happened to have enough cash in the brokerage, if I had them tied up in investments, not sure what that would look like, probably no issue.

I was borderline in the Schwab checking account, as most of it is in the brokerage side. I have 2 other banks with substantial balances, but the Schwab had easy online statements and proof of funds letters right there.

One thing I didn't mention earlier was I bought a one way ticket, the consulate didn't ask for a return flight, just a day to be exiting Thailand. Hopefully the airline won't ask, If they do, I will buy a fully refundable return right there and not use it.

Airline would only ask for onward flight if you were flying visa, exempt.

With a visa that will not occur.

Have print out of your eVisa

Awesome.   I am in the same boat and I had read that applicants for some of the elite type visas were getting pushback about using brokerage account cash, so I was concerned about Non-O.   Happy it worked for you, hopefully the same for me.   Thanks for reply.

Perhaps we can now get back on topic after this thread was high jacked and respond to the OP.

@Khyron

I previously posted some questions and information.

Thai Spouse, married in Thailand.

Treetops mentioned doing the TM30 online before I get there, is there an advantage to doing it online or in person? Or is it basically the same?

Thanks to all for the great help.

Hope the other consulates are more quick in handling visa submissions compared to the Thai Consulate in Paris that seems very slow to deliver. Not surprising why europeans are going elsewhere in Asia to spend their money.

Thanks, no issues there then.

You have to register first, then you can submit online.
Register > https://tm30.immigration.go.th/tm30api/loginExternal.jsp?value=EXT&id=e8e3668c8cfc0af827f3dfde012368dd

Guide > https://tm30.immigration.go.th/Foreigner/th/NotifyResidenceTH.html

As you'll require a COR to open a bank account, which can only be obtained in person, I suggested you kill two birds with one stone by submitting the TM30 in person and applying for the COR at the same time.

Passport.
Copy of passport ID page, visa and entry stamp.
Signed copies of SIL's Tabien Baan and ID card.

  • 2 weeks later...

Is having the bank statements for three months a new rule? The last time I applied for the E-visa using the LA Consulate only the most current bank statement was required.

Were you able to get the "required" letter from the bank certifying your funds? The banks here in Washington State will not supply such a letter or statement to that effect, they say it is against their policy. In the past a notarized statement written by the account owner certifying that the information was correct has sufficed, but I am interested to know what you experienced in NoCal.

I had trouble even finding a Public Notary that would notarize a statement of fact made by myself, I was told that our State had recently passed a new law with strict requirements as far as what a public notary could notarize.
