Police launched an investigation after the body of a 72-year-old man was found in two parts beneath a bridge in Thung Khru district, Bangkok, on 25 September. Officers were called to the scene at 18:00, following reports of a corpse near Soi Pracha Uthit 90, under the Ya Saeng canal bridge. The remains, later identified as Mr Chusak, were in an advanced state of decomposition with some internal organs missing.

Investigators from Thung Khru Police Station, forensic officers, and medical examiners from Siriraj Hospital attended the site. They found the upper and lower parts of the body around three metres apart. The remains were retrieved by volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation for further examination.

Relatives and locals described the man as having lived under the bridge for one to two years. His sister said he had previously been harassed by two young men who asked him for money, later burning his clothes when he refused. She told police she suspected foul play, as her brother’s phone had once been stolen and he often spoke of being troubled by drug users in the area.

Another resident, Ms Phueng, 36, who regularly brought food and water to Mr Chusak, recalled that he had been unwell in the days before his death. On 21 September, she saw him weak and urged him to seek medical help, but he declined. She added that he had often been targeted by people burning garbage near his sleeping place and suggested his body may have been scavenged by monitor lizards common in the vicinity.

Public health worker Mr Krissanapong Wongkutphet, who discovered the body, said he noticed burn-like marks on the man’s legs before alerting authorities. Police secured the area and began gathering evidence while forensic teams documented the scene. Early assessments noted no immediate conclusion about the cause of death.

The body has been sent to Siriraj Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy. Police have stated that findings will determine whether the death was the result of natural causes, illness or external factors.

Govt's only solution to the homeless is to block off the bridges rather than offer compassionate social care.
