The Eastern Border Task Force (EBTF) reported a sharp rise in illegal border crossings following the closure of checkpoints along the Thai-Cambodian border. Between 17 June and 25 September 2025, authorities recorded 140 incidents involving 872 individuals attempting to cross the border illegally. This includes 354 Thais, 472 Cambodians and others from China, Nigeria, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

According to Col. Chainanong Kasee, commander of the Aranyaprathet Task Force, the majority of arrests involved inbound crossings into Thailand, with 107 incidents involving 626 people. Of these, 370 were Cambodian and 215 Thai nationals, alongside other foreign nationals. Outbound crossings accounted for 33 incidents with 246 people, including 139 Thais and 102 Cambodians.

Authorities also seized illegal goods during operations, including SIM cards, motorcycles and other consumer items. This reflects organised criminal activity exploiting border routes. The high number of Cambodian nationals arrested, 472 in total, highlights the persistent demand for work opportunities in Thailand despite increased border restrictions.

The situation stems from the ongoing closure of checkpoints as part of efforts to apply economic pressure, combined with unrest along the border. Cambodian economic difficulties, including severe job shortages, have driven people to take risks to cross into Thailand. Local sources note that government priorities in Cambodia have focused on military matters rather than addressing economic hardship.

Col. Kasee emphasised the need for continued vigilance and strict enforcement along the border to control illegal crossings. The growing numbers pose challenges for border security and could impact both local stability and the regional economy. Authorities are considering further measures to address the issue.
