A 46-year-old Myanmar national has reported being defrauded of nearly 100,000 baht in a scam involving promises of a Thai national ID card. The victim, identified only as Mr Dan, a labourer, appealed to the media in Nakhon Pathom after discovering that the ID card he received was counterfeit. The case has raised concerns about fraudulent networks exploiting migrant workers with false promises of legal documentation.

Mr Dan explained that the ordeal began in 2024 when a friend introduced him to a couple, referred to as Mr A and Mrs B, who were contractors allegedly involved in providing 10-year residence cards for foreign nationals. The couple initially demanded 55,000 baht for the process, of which 25,000 baht was transferred to Mrs B’s bank account on 18 September 2024. Later, an additional 30,000 baht was paid on 10 October 2024, but the application for the card was unsuccessful.

After the failure, Mr A and Mrs B refunded 30,000 baht but retained 25,000 baht, claiming they would repay within two months and attempt the process again. They later suggested applying directly for a Thai national ID card instead and introduced Mr Dan to Ms C, who claimed to be an official in Thong Pha Phum district, Kanchanaburi. Two sisters, Ms D and Ms K, were also allegedly involved in arranging the documents, demanding 60,000 baht per application.

Mr Dan stated he paid 45,000 baht towards this arrangement, including 25,000 baht already withheld by Mr A and Mrs B, plus further transfers: 5,000 baht and 15,000 baht to Ms C, and 10,000 baht to Ms D. He was told to wait until the evening of the same day, when he was handed what appeared to be a Thai national ID card by Ms C. Believing it to be authentic, he attempted to use it to purchase and register a SIM card in Nakhon Pathom.

However, the registration failed when authorities confirmed the document was fake. Realising he had been deceived, Mr Dan turned to the media to publicise the incident and called for legal action against those involved. He emphasised the financial and personal impact of the fraud, which left him without the promised legal status or reimbursement of funds.

The case highlights how fraudulent groups exploit migrants seeking documentation, using false promises and counterfeit documents to extract large sums of money. Authorities are expected to investigate the individuals named in the complaint, including those allegedly posing as officials.

Key Takeaways

• A Myanmar worker reported losing nearly 100,000 baht in an ID card scam.

• Fraudsters included couples and individuals posing as Thai officials.

• The counterfeit ID card was discovered when he tried to register a SIM card.

Yeah, it also raises concerns about how to deal with people who pay 100k for something that cost under 100 baht. After, the guy complain over a fake card. Of course, it´s fake!
