The Department of Tourism and Pattaya Tourist Police, on 26 September, launched an operation targeting unlicensed tour guides in Pattaya. The operation resulted in the arrest of a Chinese national accused of impersonating a licensed guide while leading foreign tourists. The crackdown was led by senior officials including Jaturont Phakdeevanit, Director-General of the Department of Tourism, and Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-am, Commander of the Tourist Police Division.

The operation forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen tourism management and ensure safety for visitors. Illegal guiding operations have been a recurring issue in Pattaya, raising concerns about both safety and service quality. Authorities coordinated closely to inspect tourist areas and verify guide credentials, resulting in multiple warnings and arrests.

The arrested guide was found operating without proper licensing and credentials, reportedly charging tourists for services under false pretences. The case highlights persistent challenges in regulating foreign tour operations, especially involving unregistered guides targeting large tourist flows. Authorities stressed the importance of verifying guide licences before engaging their services.

Officials have indicated that such operations will continue to ensure compliance with the law and to protect Pattaya’s reputation as a major tourist destination. They also called for cooperation from tourists and tourism businesses in reporting suspected illegal guiding activities. The arrested guide will face legal proceedings under relevant tourism laws.

A review of the categories might be warranted, to fill the positions the locals don't want ,but on the whole I admire THailand for protecting it's people and their income.

The problem is there is not many Chinese speaking Thai tour guides, same here in Phuket, but I thought they were allowed to have aChinese and a Thai tour guide together?

As multiple warnings and arrests doesn't help, deport them back to China, and keep them there.

My gf is a tour guide and can speak Mandarin. Does she complain about Chinese tourists though. Much prefers Europeans.

I thought so too. I have 2 Thai friends that were guides for Chinese and they always had a Chinese guide with them. That was before Covid and they have other jobs since, so today, I don't know.

No I disagree, protecting Thailand jobs and reserving some of them them to Thais is a policy good for the people. Looking after their nationals is what governments should do. Oh, and TAT certainly don't make the laws here!

I do find it very strange that some people think that it is ok for any Tom Dick or Harry to turn up in Thailand and start working. Of course if Thais were allowed to turn up in the UK say on a tourist visa then start doing any job that they liked I suppose then it would be fair. Look how the US is treating foreign nationals actually on a working visa.

Situation may be overdue a reset globally......reciprocity on illegality isn't a solution. Governments should look after their own peoples first.
