A 63-year-old man in Udon Thani has been arrested after fatally shooting his son during a violent family dispute. The incident occurred on 28 September at a house in Ban Non Yang, Kud Sa Subdistrict, Mueang District, leaving the 30-year-old victim dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Police, forensic officers and rescue workers reached the scene despite floodwaters hindering access.

The suspect, identified as Mr Kambai, was found sitting calmly near Wat That Sawang Non Yang, around 500 metres from the house, waiting to surrender. At the crime scene, officers discovered the victim lying face down in blood outside the single-storey wooden home. His mother, 59-year-old Ms Sompong, was inside the house in shock, while the father handed over a homemade long-barrelled shotgun as the murder weapon.

According to Ms Sompong, she had just returned from selling goods at a local market and was preparing to cook mushroom curry for her son when the incident happened. She heard a single gunshot and then saw her son crying out in pain before collapsing at the front of the house. She revealed that her son had been addicted to methamphetamine since secondary school and frequently clashed with his father, often resorting to violence.

Mr Kambai admitted to the shooting, stating he was provoked when his son insulted his wife and demanded instant noodles before verbally abusing her again. He said he initially considered attacking his son with a knife but instead retrieved a gun loaned to him by a friend for hunting birds. “I have endured this for too long. My son has been addicted since Primary 6, always asking for money and assaulting his mother. Two days ago, he kicked her to the ground. I could not take it anymore,” he told police.

Village headman Mr Kiatthisak Suwattadee confirmed that the family had a history of violent disputes, with local officials intervening on multiple occasions due to the son’s behaviour. He said the father had often sought advice, appearing increasingly desperate over his son’s addiction and violence. After the shooting, the father reportedly confessed openly and awaited arrest without resistance.

Police have charged Mr Kambai murder and firearms offences. His son’s body has been sent for autopsy at Udon Thani Hospital as part of the investigation. Authorities will now proceed with formal legal action, while local residents remain unsettled by the long-standing family conflict that culminated in the fatal shooting.

Difficult to feel much for the son. The father faces life in prison and mother lost husband and son.

No great loss by the sounds of it
