We asked 1,000 Americans who they blame for the shutdown

The Post’s poll finds significantly more Americans blame President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans for the shutdown than Democrats, though many say they are not sure. People express moderate concern about the shutdown’s impact at this early stage, with “somewhat concerned” the most common answer. A large majority support Democrats’ call to extend federal health insurance subsidies in general, though just under half support the party demanding this if it extends the government shutdown.

71% say federal subsidies for the Affordable Care Act should be extended. If the Democrats are smart, they'll hold out for a week, to make as many Americans as possible know about how the Republicans are knifing health care. And then they'll vote to pass the budget extension.

Trump has stated that the shutdown is good, as it will allow he to dismiss more government workers.

Less government is a good thing. They should do it more often the country will be fine

Well, the thing is, he's made his firing of these workers conditional. So, if the shutdown ends before he executes his threat, that means he's going to continue to have the Federal Govt spend money on useless workers?

The Democrats rely on the average person not paying attention to the details. In reality, it was the Democrats who shut down the government. These subsidies were intended to be temporary, which highlights another example of how the ACA has failed. The Democrats are blowing up the federal budget with social programs.

Obama's ACA is a total failure.

The Texas floods that killed hundreds demonstrated precisely why less government is definitely not a good thing.

There are many other examples.

The Republicans hold the majority.

Now let’s hear you explain how the minority are controlling the Government.

Give it your best shot.

Same trend in other polls, ex.

To some of us outside the US the government continually shutting down is something that only happens in 3rd world countries.

Except that in the US, the government never actually shuts down, so you'd keep getting your benefits

It raised my health care insurance about $1200 a year, so someone else can get healthcare for free.

the extension they are asking for is a permanent one. Not an extension at all. This was one reason why the Republicans rejected the proposal. The Dems are pushing for things not as extensions. But as permanent changes. knowing full well it would be rejected.

The Republicans control the House and Senate, so there must be a number of Republican who are not voting along party lines.  But I tend to agree.  I am absolutely against US taxpayers being on the hook for social welfare programs being paid out to illegal immigrants.  That is one of the issues that is holding up the legislation.  But if Republicans were voting as a block they should be about to pass their on continuing resolution.  Personally I'd like to see that War Department spending sliced in half and redirected to infrastructure and social programs for American citizens.  Like really looking into the root causes of homelessness and actually doing something about it.  Like FDR's work programs in the 1930s. Make jobs, offer training, and build infrastructure.  Instead they build bombs and ship them to places like Israel for free.  The welfare programs for sovereign countries including foreign aid and free weapons and war funding for the Administration's and Congress' "friends" needs to end.

Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate to pass a continuing resolution.

How would more government have helped?

The ACA made health care so affordable, that it is necessary to extend government subsidies so that people can pay for it...

Time to put a sombrero on it.

Pretty silly argument. Biden didn't mean for them to be temporary, it was just that given the very slim Democratic majorities in the House and Senate it was the best he could do. But even it was, so what? You think it's impossible for the Congress to extend it? There was nothing Trump could do about it? Because if that's the case, how do you explain the fact that provisions of Trump's tax plan from his first term were about to expire but he managed to extend them and even expand their scope. And that's for a bill that is very unpopular with most Americans.

The provisions that Biden got it to fund illegal alien healthcare removed permanently in a bill earlier that passed earlier this year with Democrat support.

The left has now shut the government down, in an attempt to change legislation that has ALREADY been passed.
