UK sales of Palestinian food up 50% as shoppers show solidarity

Zaytoun, a Palestinian social-enterprise specialising in olive oil, dates and other food products, has recorded a 50 % rise in UK sales, reaching £3.2 million in 2024.

The surge reflects increasing consumer solidarity: many Britons are choosing to buy these goods as a symbolic act in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

The managing director, Manal Ramadan White, describes these purchases as small but meaningful gestures: “they could hold it in their hand and say, I have done this.” Zaytoun was founded to support Palestinian farmers via fair trade, though it currently can’t carry the standard Fairtrade logo. The company halted organic / fairtrade certification for its olive oil last year because no auditor could safely operate in the region.

Despite these logistical and political hurdles, Zaytoun continues buying olive products from small farmers in the West Bank. The price for a 500 ml bottle in the UK is about £15. Shipping is difficult: goods exit via the Israeli port of Haifa, traverse checkpoints, and must be re-stacked lower to allow security checks.

The enterprise’s story is one of persistence: launched in 2004 as a volunteer initiative, it has turned into a business that leans heavily on consumer values and solidarity.

While demand for Zaytoun’s products (which also include almonds and giant couscous) has been strong, tight profit margins and supply challenges remain. Nonetheless, the 50 % growth in UK sales suggests many shoppers are using their purchasing power to express political and ethical solidarity.

Key Takeaways

1. Surge in UK demand — Zaytoun’s UK sales rose ~50 % in 2024, reaching £3.2m, driven by consumer solidarity.

2. Certification obstacles — Security and access issues prevent full Fairtrade certification of Palestinian olive oil.

3. Logistical strain — Exports must navigate checkpoints, altered stacking, and complex routes through Israel.

More likely we've got loads of undocumented Palestinians here who are spending their 50 pounds a week pocket money on these goods to supplement their 3 meals a day at the hotel buffet.

Whoa, another hater! The Palestinians in Thailand get no subsidies and are waiting for refugee status in third countries

Yes Thailand has a much more sensible approach than the idiotic UK government.

From the article it seems many people support Palestine but in reality they are supporting a psychotic gang called Hamas not the decent people of the area.
