I am licenced in the UK for seven types of vehicle, from motorcycle to articulated road train. Yet I still can't get a Thai licence. Bangkok DLT wanted me to sit through 5 hours of boring Thai videos, like a Thai soap opera. I refused and walked out before it gave me brain damage.

Who cares what u r licensed for back home? It's not the you cannot get a Thai license, it's just that you refuse to go through the procedure. Up to you as they say

This is a perfect example of where you'd be much better to simply pay an agent.   For maybe 5-8K THB , several agents in HKT would have all your docs sorted, including the residence cert, an

I looked at the online queue and there were no appointments available. Typical! So I am just gonna go there.

There appears to be an agreement between the UK and Thailand where the UK licence is accepted in Thailand. Obviously the greedy Thai Police are ignoring this. I reckon they could be making 2 - 300,000 Baht / day on the main road into Phuket alone.

You do not need an appointment you can go and wait untill the appointments go in, it takes all day and it's 255bht for a motorbike licence.

The police isn't the biggest problem with an expired licence. The fine is payable; however, if you have an accident the insurance will not pay anything and that can be a lot more expensive.

I will be very surprised if you will get an appointment within a week by lining up. Last year, you were lucky if you got an appointment within a month.

You do not need am appointment, did mine recently, do not use the Facebook licence people it's a scamme and you will lose any money you pay.

That sounds nice; three years ago the waiting time was almost two months, last year it was down to about a month. I hope they keep it up with no waiting time till next time I have to renew. What were you in for, renewal, new licence based on a foreign license or a new licence with driving tests etc.?

I don't know why you mention Facebook, I wouldn't dream of using help to get a license.

For a renewal it's easy. You know the date, so easy to make an appointment months in advance already.

Expiry depends on your birthdate so not necessarily the case.

You don't know your birthday? 😄

By the way, the two year one does not expire on ones birthday but two years after it is issued.

I know, I got one a few months ago, but zzzzz was talking about a renewal therefore a 5 year licence.

Renewal does not automatically result in a 5 year license; it depend on ones visa. A tourist visa and the DTV only gives you a renewal for two years from the date it is issued ☹️

RENEWAL:
correct, it expires on ur bd so go the day after get almost 6 years

Correct tourist visa, visa exempt only gets ya 2 years licenses
DTV's many reports people getting 5 , depends on area

I believe most of those reports are from when the DTV was new. Today, they all give two years on the DTV - bar perhaps some transport offices on the outskirts of civilisation 🫣
