What on earth could cause this to happen in the early hours ?, no cooking done for around 8hrs, all gas taps off, inside kitchen not open to the elements.

Seems like an inherent issue with hardened glass?

A google search for Cause for Shattered gas cooker glass gives a lot of info.

Well it is about 6+ years old

The exact same thing happened to a similar, Lucky Flame two burner gas stove of ours a while ago.

I always thought it was caused by excessive heat.

From the information on your thread, now I'm not so sure.

The one we use now in our bahn soo-un has a stainless steel top.

I'll never go with glass again.

It happened me too. My main suspect is my cat but no evidence...

Well it is safety glass, so it could be something was dropped on it or internal tension in the glass due to cooking.

SO bad manufactured glass.

Had once big brand new window in house (not safetyglass) and that one cracked over a certain area.

Just from one day to the other in night.

Incredible, with me of all people of course. Said to be tension in the glass.  

The glass is adhered to the metal frame, contraction and expansion of the metal frame most likely caused the glass to break.

I just brought a new metal one... no more glass ones for me..

I have had a similar failing but despite the immediate mess factor and given the relative in-expense I have gone back to a glass top. The interim stainless one was no cheaper and the surface deteriorated rapidly making it look as dirty as it became.

No doubt there are upmarket products available in places but I avoid the concept of buying items that are guaranteed to outlast me ! lmao

I don't believe what just happened yesterday, we went to Trat Makro purchased the steel one all packed up in a nice box with a handle, got home to KC unpacked it and the two cast bits that you place the pots on were missing, we chose the 890b one above the 490b one, what with the ferry costs+fuel its hardly worth taking it back, but Mrs. B, has decided to go back with it, that will increase the price to around 1,500, so a word of warning, anything you buy, you must open and check before leaving the store.
