New Thai e-work permit

I can't find anything recent in the English language press but this is from a Japanese site (translated by Google Translate):

It seems it will go live on October the 13th.

The government website looks like this:

Once registered, you have to get your biometric details inputted into the system. So this does require visiting some unspecified offices (apparently there are 44 of these offices across Bangkok) in order to provide fingerprints etc and have a card printed.

This is to some extent good news as obviously the books were vulnerable to damage over the years and the possibility of loss or even theft.

For me personally this will reduce my anxiety levels during renewal, as every year I typically give one of my junior colleagues the task of taking my passport to the Ministry of Labour office and updating information. There is always a risk of them losing my passport.

My main concern with this change is how well will it integrate with other bureaucratic issues in Thailand. For instance, will the new physical e-work permit card that they give you be enough to be used as proof of residence for the driving licence applications. (The blue work permit book could be used instead of a certificate of residence etc in driving licence renewals etc.)

Haven't read anything in Thai media. Used One Stop center at Chamchuri for digital work permit, but yes, still needed to show up there for the photo and signing on the tablet. This is certainly interesting.

Seems website is up, just don't have the need to apply for one right now, so I didn't click on anything...

The way I read the news, it was for immigrant workers from neighboring countries, not regular WP holders. And besides, digital WP already exists for some - I've never had a paper WP despite having a WP for nearly 8 years.

We've always had paper work permits, now we are being told about the new e system

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been to labour office to get on system and renew…

pretty easy so far

have to go back with Thai share holder and company docs.

From the lawyers we use:

"As announced by the Ministry of Labor, all work permit processes (application and cancellation) must now be completed online through the E-Work Permit system. You may access the system via the following link: https://eworkpermit.doe.go.th/ "

I just tried registering in the system as employee using my WP number (got the message "fail - Not found an account, please check your id number"), and then using my Passport number (got the same message "fail - Not found an account, please check your id number"). So looks like i will have to visit my local Labour office.

Taninthai - Did you find that they were helpful when you visited the labour office to register?

So, foreign employees are asked to apply for the permits all by themselves?

Wanting to CANCEL my work permit, I tried to register myself (as employee) in the E-system but kept getting error messages; system wouldn't accept my WP number or my passport number.

My wife, as Employer, also couldn't get registered.

The helpline on the e-system website doesn't work.

So we went to our local Labour Department office. They didn't seem surprised we had problems with the E-system. They (1) gave us the paper forms, (2) told us what documents we needed, and (3) told us to come back with screenshot printouts showing we couldn't register and the officer would process the cancellation for us.

Returned the next day to the labour office with the paperwork/company seal and printouts, and it took the officer about 10mins to cancel my WP.

As employee, seemed I was just required to show up and bring the WP book. I did say anything, didn't do anything, just sat and waited while the officer and my wife as employer filled in two forms online.

Officer was very helpful.

Fair to say the E-system isn't fully working yet and a trip to the Labour office is still required.
