The historical background of Ukraine

I don't undestand how anyone can support Israel. They are clearly the guilty party, effecting mass immigration and taking land, then creating a Frankenstein state that is committing genocide as we speak and killing 15000 children.

I really don't get how anyone can support Israel, given how Israel has behaved.

Are you the person who supports Russia? Based on this post, you should dislike Russia.

Very few people here "support" Russia. Opposing the war in Ukraine and looking at the historical background does not mean the one "supports" Russia.

The historical background reveals that the USSR oppressed the people of Ukraine, and they had no interest in Russia after the USSR's collapse.   Ukraine is an independent nation recognized by the rest of the world, and Putin wants the USSR back.

What is your version of the historical background?

Different and a lot farther back in history than yours, but its off topic.

What is your historical understanding, starting with, I reckon, the Kievan Rus? I guess we should start with the first historical "Ukraine" care to tell me when that was?

Ukraine became part of the Russian Empire gradually through a series of wars, treaties, and annexations between the 17th and 18th centuries, as Russia expanded westward and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth declined. Here’s a concise historical outline:

1. The Cossack Hetmanate and the Treaty of Pereyaslav (1654)

  • In the mid-1600s, much of central and eastern Ukraine was ruled by Cossacks under Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

  • The Cossacks rebelled against Polish rule (1648–1657).

  • In 1654, Khmelnytsky sought protection from Tsar Alexis I of Russia, leading to the Treaty of Pereyaslav.

  • This treaty brought the Cossack Hetmanate under Russian “protection,” effectively starting Ukraine’s alignment with the Tsardom of Russia.

2. Partition of Ukraine Between Russia and Poland

  • The west (Right Bank Ukraine) stayed under Polish control, while the east (Left Bank Ukraine) came under Moscow’s influence.

  • After several wars between Russia and Poland, the Treaty of Andrusovo (1667) formalized this split.

    • Left Bank Ukraine (including Kyiv) → Russia

    • Right Bank Ukraine → Poland

3. Gradual Loss of Autonomy

  • Over the next century, the Cossack Hetmanate’s autonomy was reduced.

  • By the 1760s, Catherine the Great abolished the Hetmanate and integrated it directly into the Russian imperial system.

  • The Zaporozhian Sich (Cossack military stronghold) was destroyed in 1775, ending Cossack independence.

4. The Partitions of Poland (1772–1795)

  • When Poland was partitioned by Russia, Prussia, and Austria, Russia gained control over most of Right Bank Ukraine, uniting almost all Ukrainian lands under the Russian Empire (except western areas under Austria).

5. Summary

By 1795, nearly all of modern-day Ukraine was under Russian rule, except for Galicia and Transcarpathia, which went to Austria.

  • Eastern Ukraine → absorbed earlier via Cossack alliance

  • Western Ukraine → taken from Poland in the partitions

Ukraine predated Russ.

This is all getting silly.

Modern Ukraine is a separate and sovereign nation.

Genocidal war criminal dictator Putin wants to erase that.

This isn't a two sides thing.

Ukraine's cause is just. Putin's is not.

I define Ukraine as the country that has existed since August 24, 1991.

And now, you're spouting your usual ignorant BS again. 1000 years ago, before they even built the pigsty and three huts surrounding it that later became Moscow, the largest settlement in what is now Russia was Novgorod. Build by Swedish Vikings, and later part of Kiev Rus kingdom. So Kiev existed way earlier than the Russia that Putin claims.

Verified histological facts. Don't expect Septics to know such things.

Summary in 1795 ?  Maybe something about 1943 - 1945 and shortly after II WW ? Maybe something about before 2014 ?

Typical banderites tactic. Blaming others for everything while their "country" is rotten and corrupted to the core since the very beginning. They were not only jews. Also Russians, Ormians and over 100k Polish people (mostly children) literally butchered by ukrainian UPA / OUN beasts. But suddenly this genocide doesn't bother nowadays banderites. The methods of Wolyn killings were unimaginable vile and brutal. Same savage inhuman level like Nanjing massacre, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge, Rwanda genocidal criminals etc. And now banderites are whimpering about "genocide". Hypocrisy level of Ukrainians skyrocketed to the moon after 2014.

Russia is going to lose like in Afghanistan, as it will be drained of both men and resourses... already starting to show. The Cold War finished because the West outspent the Soviets and their system was flawed... same is happening in Ukraine and Russia will end up exhausted and no longer be able to fight, give it a year or so.

The Kremlin is the master of lies and propaganda... even their own citizens are fleeing to escape the draft. Putin is delusional and will be the one who brings about his own downfall. It's a win for the West to supply Ukraine because as they do so, the weaker and less of a threat Russia becomes... it will take Russia decades to rebuild, even if it stopped now. For Russia, it's a case of stop digging... put the spade down.

There was a times when someone claiming an earth is a round object was called a dangerous dissident. Same here. It doesn't come as a surprise that some people mentally are still somewhere in the middle ages and promoting war as best solution. Especially those who are not even involved or directly affected.

Poppycock.

A country defending its very existence as a sovereign nation against an evil barbaric power trying to erase them is not promoting war. It's Putin who is promoting this war. If he stops without winning, he dies. It's a war about regime survival for him. For Ukraine it's a war about national survival.
