Officials and industry figures met in Phuket to discuss a proposed seaplane project designed to enhance luxury tourism and boost regional connectivity. Spearheaded by Thai Seaplane Co Ltd, the initiative aims to introduce seaplane services in Phuket Bay, focusing on high-end tourists, while upholding strict environmental standards. The public forum, held on October 9 at Baan Ao Makham, was led by Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai and attended by various stakeholders.

The project is designed to support Phuket's transition into a global destination for upscale travel and wellness. Vice Governor Samawit emphasized the project's potential contribution to the province's development plan, sustainable tourism, and its reputation as a world-class maritime hub. The plan includes a temporary water runway in Phuket Bay, catering to travelers seeking quick access to nearby destinations like Krabi and the Similan Islands.

Thai Seaplane Co Ltd CEO Kasinpoj Rodko underscored the venture's potential benefits. With operations planned to start with over 100 million baht in investment over the next three years, the company has already achieved milestones such as having the country's first licensed seaplane pilot. The service promises premium air transport with flights under 90 minutes, promoting a convenient and scenic option.

Residents and stakeholders were given a platform to express concerns, especially regarding environmental impacts. The company has partnered with Kasetsart University's Faculty of Environment to conduct an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE), crucial for obtaining regulatory approval. This collaborative approach aims to ensure sustainability and transparency.

Looking forward, the initiative appears poised to elevate Phuket's tourism offering, with further discussions and evaluations expected. As the project unfolds, its impact on the local economy and environment will be closely monitored.

Key Takeaways

  • The seaplane project aims to enhance luxury tourism and improve connectivity.
  • Environmental safeguards are a priority, with local input encouraged.
  • Plans include significant financial investment and regulatory collaboration.

Water too rough for boats, no worries we send sea plane :whistling:

The hum of the engines at takeoff and landing will bring a horde of complaints once the honeymoon and novelty wear off. Operator will be looking for government subsidies (hand outs) to meet ends meet within months because of disappointing low ad factors. Hopefully no incidents will occur, but aviation and ocean water don’t mix well, I would want an experienced and seasoned pilot in that environment as a newly licensed isn’t inspiring. Just saying!

First they need the tourists.

And then convince the high end ones to go to Phuket

Fist they need to find "high end tourists" who are willing to set their foot on a contraption like this and risk their lifes.

Can someone tell me where Phuket Bay is?   There is Patong Bay, Chalong Bay and Phang Nga Bay.  But the article says Phuket Bay?  Can someone give the industry figures a map of Phuket.
