It is possible to set up email accounts that are virtually impossible to trace.  Plenty of info on the Net about how to do it.

Given enough time,  experts with the National Security Agency  have the skills, software and computer strength to trace just about any email address.  However, they would need a very strong reason to do so.   Short of action by the NSA or equivalent agency in another country, email addresses can be set up that are untraceable.
