Thailand Plans Jan 31 House Dissolution, March 29 Election Day

The Thai government has tentatively set January 31st as the date for dissolving the House, aiming to hold a general election on March 29th. Dr. Borwornsak Uwanno, Deputy Prime Minister for legal affairs, revealed this plan, which also includes proposing a new Constitution and conducting a public referendum. These steps are part of the agreement with the opposition People’s Party, promising dissolution after four months in office.

Since the government began its term on October 1st, the timeline dictates the House must dissolve by the end of January. Following this, the general election should occur within 60 days, making March 29th the proposed date. The passage of the new Constitution needs to be completed by December 20th, allowing time for an official referendum on the same day as the election, potentially saving approximately six billion baht by combining the events.

If a new Referendum Act receives royal assent, the timeline for the referendum could be reduced to 60 days instead of 90. This adjustment would not affect the dissolution date or the election timeline but would tighten the schedule ahead of the referendum. Dr. Borwornsak emphasised the importance of adhering to these deadlines to maintain governmental commitments.

Moving forward, officials must ensure that the charter passes its final reading by mid-December. Coordinating both the election and the referendum on March 29th could prove efficient and cost-effective, if executed correctly. The focus remains on meeting these timelines without compromising the legislative process.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai House dissolution set for January 31st, with elections on March 29th.
  • A new Constitution needs final approval by December 20th.
  • Combining referendum and election could save six billion baht.

In the meantime there is already a case to the election commitee to dissolve BJT and PP.... As I said several times before they will all do that is possible to prevent that the PP will take part and win the new elections.. Procedures will be delayed and as a result just before the elections the results are announced and the PP members can't go to another party anymore.. The army, elite and the old establishment  will do and did it again to prevent changes to the country and stay in power
