"...the hotel gave permission!"

Don't talk nonsense...where in the OP was it stated that the hotel gave permission for the original nude?  Read again and learn.

Ehhhh bin dipper you read again. The hotel gave her permission. They just didn’t like what she did so removed part of it. Get yourself to specsavers or school and learn to read. Simple

  • For me the end-state is better than the original (which looks pretty unconvincing/gratuitous).   Never occurred to the 'artist' that a different country might have - and sometimes enforce -

  • Sorry Myrtille, there are a few very sad/stupid people around

  • Have to agree....

Quote the part from the OP where that was stated, then.

Never occurred to the 'artist' that a different country might have - and sometimes enforce - different cultural values. "Oh golly, I thought they would love my art just as they do in France. I've won so many prizes!"

Cannot go around Thailand painting nudes but there is other people you could paint and become a hero

Obvious you can’t read if you have to ask. What a 🔔🔚

no need to "paint it black" - just draw boxers over!

I can read that's how I know that nowhere in the OP does it specify that the hotel gave permission for the mural as painted.   That's why you cannot quote it.   Be careful with the emoji flame and insult.

I guess whoever commissioned it was hoping for something more like the hot stuff for lovers style from the 1980's...

Despite being a creative invitation, the hotel chose to obscure the mural, retaining only its decorative elements.

The language used in the article lacks definitive clarity.

They could, for instance, have written: “Despite inviting the artist to create a mural, the hotel chose to obscure it...”

However, by saying “Despite being a creative invitation” the author does not suggest that the hotel invited the artist. Rather, it implies that the mural itself served as a creative invitation – a work intended to engage, inspire, or invite reflection and interaction.

Ultimately, the interpretation hinges on how much trust we place in the author’s phrasing.

That said, it seems highly unlikely that the artist would have painted directly on the hotel walls without permission.

Such a work would have taken time to complete and been visible over several days. Therefore, regardless of the ambiguity in the article, it is a reasonable assumption that the artist did in fact have the hotel’s consent.

If the artist hadn’t received permission, that fact would almost certainly have been mentioned in the article.

Thus: debating the implication of the phrase “Despite being a creative invitation” is rather moot - clearly the artist had permission to paint a mural - it is the nature of the mural the hotel found objectionable, not the fact that one had been painted in the first place.....

A French artist, Myrtille Tibayrenc, has raised concerns after her mural was covered by dark paint at a hotel near Bangkok’s Patpong red-light district. The mural depicted a nude male figure and was part of the Krung Thep Creative Streets project, supported by the French Embassy. The artist expressed her frustration on Facebook, labeling the action as "hypocrisy" given its proximity to Patpong.

Tibayrenc's artwork featured a nude, androgynous figure surrounded by vibrant floral and avian motifs. Despite being a creative invitation, the hotel chose to obscure the mural, retaining only its decorative elements. This decision was made without Tibayrenc’s consent, prompting her to criticize both the hotel and broader societal attitudes towards nudity.

The Bang Rak District Office quickly distanced itself from the incident, stating that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration had no involvement. They revealed that the hotel itself initiated the covering to "correct" the mural, supposedly after having informed the artist. The office, however, retracted its statement following public backlash, as Tibayrenc maintained she was not given prior notice.

Reactions have highlighted a clash between artistic freedom and prevailing cultural norms in Thailand. The incident underscores ongoing tensions in Patpong, a place known for its contrasting conservative and liberal values. Tibayrenc, noted for her provocative style, found the censorship particularly ironic, given the area's tradition of adult entertainment.

Looking forward, the hotel management is expected to communicate with Tibayrenc to explain their actions. However, the situation remains unresolved as no further announcements have been made by local authorities. The artist intends to continue using her platform to question restrictions on artistic expression.

Key Takeaways

  • A nude mural by French artist Myrtille Tibayrenc was censored at a Bangkok hotel.
  • The artist criticized the act as "hypocrisy" due to its location near a red-light district.
  • Local authorities deny involvement, stating the hotel made the decision independently.

Mme. Tibayrenc, you are extravagantly missing the point: your art has been deconstructed and aesthetically elevated to a higher plane.

The figurative expression you so carefully depicted has morphed into a conceptual art piece: each viewer, aware of the hotel's daring act, will "fill in" the darkened area with their own remembered concept of the image of the dude in his birthday suit.

Get with the program, chickie.
