Phuket is progressing with an innovative plan to integrate AI-driven traffic lights at busy intersections, aiming to reduce congestion before the upcoming tourist High Season. This effort, led by the Phuket Highways Department, seeks to manage traffic more effectively by adjusting signal timings based on real-time conditions.

The plan, presented on October 14 at a meeting chaired by Governor Saransak Srikruanetra, will roll out in two phases. Phase One focuses on upgrading existing traffic infrastructure with smart sensors and AI software. Phase Two will see the introduction of digital warning signs and real-time traffic updates, overseen by a central control center.

Governor Saransak emphasized the importance of collaboration among government, private sectors, and the public to transform Phuket into a smart city and a leading tourism destination. The meeting included key figures such as Vice Governor Samawit Suphanpai and Phuket Land Transport Office Chief Adcha Buachan.

Ahead of a Provincial Traffic Management Subcommittee meeting on November 3, the Highways Department is gathering current traffic data to finalize action plans. This move coincides with Phuket's preparations to handle an influx of tourists, with expectations of 56,000 daily passengers and 380 flights starting October 26.

Beyond traffic lights, significant transport projects were discussed. A 1.95km road from Baan Muang Mai to Phuket Airport is set for completion by 2028, alongside the expansion of Route 4027 by 2026. Additionally, efforts continue on the Patong Tunnel and Phase 2 of the Phuket Expressway.

Port expansions are also underway to strengthen Phuket's position as a logistics hub, with funding secured for several piers. Airport developments aim to increase capacity to 18 million passengers annually, complemented by a new Paris-Phuket flight route launching on November 28.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket is implementing AI traffic lights to address congestion.
  • Transport expansions include road, tunnel, and airport upgrades.
  • New flights and port enhancements boost regional connectivity.

That's novel

Even if it is successful I doubt that it would be adopted to control the junctions on the inner Bangkok Sukhumvit Road.😋
