A parasailing assistant in Phuket heroically saved a tourist after a boat capsized near Kata Beach during a sudden storm on October 16. As the boat overturned, the assistant, while airborne with the tourist, swiftly unbuckled his harness and plunged into the sea. This courageous act lightened the weight for the tourist, enabling a safe glide towards the shore.

The parachute landed close to the beach, where rescue workers provided immediate assistance. Channel 7 reported the tourist experienced chest tightness, and the assistant sustained a minor facial injury. Both were transported to Chalong Hospital, and are now under medical observation, but no serious injuries or fatalities occurred.

This heroic act drew praise from Thai netizens for the staff member's quick thinking that prevented further harm. This incident recalls a tragic event in January when a parasailing assistant died while assisting a tourist off Karon Beach. He fell from a height equivalent to a 15-storey building, ensuring the tourist was safe.

In February the previous year, another incident occurred when a Chinese ladyboy suffered a broken leg due to an accident involving sudden wind changes off Karon Beach. The operator was accused of prioritizing profit over safety but ultimately paid 400,000 baht in compensation.

Key Takeaways

  • An assistant heroically ensured a tourist's safety during a sudden storm.
  • No serious injuries or deaths were reported in this incident.
  • Past parasailing mishaps in the area have involved severe injuries.

This article is complete fantasy!

During rain squalls, which are very frequent at this time of year, the wind suddenly increases as the front passes.  Squalls are easy to see, the sky darkens as they approach from the sea (westerly), or as in this case, from the land (easterly). The wind lasts only about ten minutes.

The operator was reckless in taking off when a squall was obviously approaching.  As the speedboat was proceeding parallel to the beach to its turning point, the sudden offshore wind hit the rig sideways.  The parachute immediately blew to the right so that it was pulling the speedboat sideways with great force, capsizing the boat.  It was not a storm and as the wind was blowing from the beach, there were no waves.

The parachute boats are not seaworthy. They are bare hulls, very light weight and are very narrow so they can be dragged through narrow streets on trailers each morning and evening.  The boats don’t have rudders and steer only by rotating the outboard engine.

The parachute assistant did not ‘unbuckle his harness’ as they don’t wear harnesses despite being directed to do so after the recent death of one assistant. The reduction of weight by his heroic abandoning ship did not help the customer make a ‘a safe glide towards the shore’ as the strong wind was blowing away from the shore and the parachute can be seen to rise sharply after he dropped.

The parasailing operators appear to be unsupervised and can often be seen taking risks to people on the beach as well as swimming. On busy days they operate until full darkness which is extremely hazardous.

Finally, the person injured during a parasail landing earlier this year was not a ‘Chinese ladyboy’ She was a female Chinese tourist.
