A 40-year-old man in Nong Khai has been arrested after allegedly shooting his mentally ill uncle dead in the middle of a local road. The incident occurred around 09:50 on 17 October in Soi Sombun, Samakkhi community, Hat Kham subdistrict, Mueang district. Police, forensic officers and rescue workers arrived to find the body of a 53-year-old man lying face-up on the road with several gunshot wounds.

The deceased, identified as Mr Thepwan, also known as “Noi,” had blood flowing from his mouth and nose. Nearby, police found a red bicycle and a hat but no shell casings, though a bullet was discovered. The autopsy revealed three gunshot wounds, one to his torso, one to his left shoulder and one to his left arm.

Witnesses reported hearing three to four loud bangs but did not see the shooting. One neighbour, Mr Chawi, said he initially thought the sounds were firecrackers until someone shouted that a person had been shot. Another resident, Mrs Nirachan, the former head of the Samakkhi community, said the victim had long suffered from mental illness and had been admitted to hospital several times. Although treatment temporarily improved his behaviour, he often relapsed, becoming aggressive and verbally abusive toward relatives and neighbours.

Local residents added that the man’s erratic outbursts typically occurred on Buddhist holy days, though he rarely left his home. He was known to carry two knives but had not previously attacked anyone. Many in the community were familiar with his behaviour and had grown used to it.

Police investigations quickly identified the suspect as the victim’s nephew, Mr Apichart, known as “Ole.” Earlier that morning, the victim had reportedly smashed household items and threatened to harm the suspect’s mother. When Ole tried to intervene, his uncle allegedly insulted and attempted to attack him. The uncle later cycled away from home, followed by Ole on a motorcycle. Moments later, witnesses heard an argument followed by gunfire.

Officers from Mueang Nong Khai Police Station tracked and arrested the suspect near his home shortly after the incident. He later led police to the firearm used in the shooting. Investigators are now preparing to question him further and proceed with legal action in accordance with the law.

He should get a community service award.

Not really . But at least a compassionate discharge for accidental manslaughter in self defense.
