A 45-year-old Hong Kong national has been arrested in Bangkok after allegedly scamming a Thai victim into transferring 410,000 baht and attempting to trick them into buying 14 million baht worth of gold. The swift intervention of police from the Phlapphla Chai 2 Police Station prevented the loss, leading to the arrest of the suspect, identified as Mr. Tang Ming Yin.

The arrest took place at 17:00 on October 18 along Song Sawat Road in Samphanthawong District, following a joint operation by officers from Metropolitan Police Division 6. Police also recovered several gold bars, including four 50-baht bars, two 20-baht bars, and four 5-baht bars, all branded Hua Seng Heng, with a total weight of 260 baht. Other seized items included a Hong Kong passport and a mobile phone.

The case began late on October 17 when the victim reported being defrauded by scammers posing as officials, leading to a transfer of 410,000 baht. The scammers later claimed the victim’s bank account was frozen and instructed them to withdraw all remaining savings to purchase 250 baht of gold, worth approximately 14 million baht, and deliver it to the group. The victim, later feeling unsafe after receiving the suspects’ address, sought police assistance at Phlapphla Chai 2 Station. Officers secured the gold and arranged temporary accommodation for the victim.

On October 18, police coordinated a sting operation in which the victim agreed to meet the scammer, who had instructed that the gold be hidden in Anlene milk tins, at Samitivej Chinatown Hospital. Mr. Tang appeared at the agreed time, matching the description given to the victim. Officers identified themselves and arrested him on charges of fraud by impersonation.

Subsequent searches of his residence at Delta-9 Hostel in Phra Khanong uncovered the gold and a Hong Kong passport confirming he had overstayed in Thailand. Police added the charge of overstaying his visa. Examination of his iPhone 13 Pro revealed evidence of multiple similar scams, prompting investigators to seize the device for further analysis and contact potential victims to recover their assets.

Authorities have transferred Mr. Tang to investigators at Phlapphla Chai 2 Police Station for prosecution. Police are urging other potential victims to come forward to reclaim lost property as the investigation expands.
