Phuket is gearing up to become the Andaman region's primary transport hub, as announced by Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. The ambitious plan involves nine major infrastructure projects totaling 130 billion baht, targeting improvements in logistics and mobility across southern provinces. Key officials, including Phuket's governor and representatives from vital transportation agencies, have backed the proposal.

Recent developments include the proposed Kathu–Patong Tunnel, a 16.76-billion-baht project aimed at reducing travel time between the airport and Patong to just 20 minutes. Other significant projects include a 46.75-billion-baht expressway and a 1.3-billion-baht flyover at Muang Mai. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance the region’s connectivity.

In addition to road expansions and traffic management enhancements, the plan features the development of a 46-billion-baht Light Rail Transit system. This system will connect Phuket airport to Chalong Intersection, dramatically improving local transit options. Furthermore, the Andaman Port project will link Krabi, Phangnga, and Phuket, supplemented by new cruise terminal facilities and expanded airport capacity.

Transport Minister Phiphat emphasized the transformative potential of these projects over the next five years. He highlighted their role in addressing traffic congestion, reducing travel times, and elevating Phuket to a global smart mobility hub. Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, president of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, has stressed the urgency of these upgrades due to daily traffic challenges.

Looking ahead, the government is urged to expedite these developments to address transportation issues promptly. The ambitious infrastructure improvements are envisioned to solidify Phuket's status, not only as a major transport hub but also as a smart city model for the entire region.

Carry on! Ruin this once-beautiful island even more than you already have - further words fail me!

I've said this before, but, in the words of Joni Mitchell "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"
