Myanmar Junta Retakes Territory with China's Support

Myanmar's army is taking back territory with relentless air strikes - and China's help

Myanmar's military has regained control of strategic areas, including Kyaukme and Hsipaw, with significant backing from China. After insurgents, led by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), captured these towns, the junta responded with relentless airstrikes and artillery. The military's swift recapture within weeks highlights the shifting power balance in favor of the junta following initial gains by the opposition last year.

The military's increased capabilities are partly due to Chinese support, including advanced drones and other military technology. China's backing is linked to its interest in stabilizing regions crucial for trade routes from the Chinese border. This comes as the military plans to hold elections in December, aiming to reclaim lost territories to ensure voting can occur, despite widespread condemnation and exclusion of key political parties.

The opposition, comprising fragmented groups and poorly armed defense forces, struggles against the junta's superior firepower. Despite earlier successes, a lack of unified leadership and internal mistrust among ethnic groups hinder their resistance efforts. The junta has recruited thousands through forced conscription, bolstering its ranks with inexperienced but numerous troops, further tipping the scales.

Chinese influence has pressured ethnic armies, like those in the Brotherhood Alliance, to cease operations against the junta. China’s support stems from a desire to maintain stability and protect its regional interests, notably its investments and strategic access to the Indian Ocean. This pragmatic approach seeks to prevent state collapse, despite Beijing's previous unease over Myanmar's 2021 coup.

Elsewhere, resistance persists in regions like Rakhine and Chin States, where insurgents continue to hold ground. However, the junta concentrates its military efforts on areas vital for trade and electoral operations, using this focused strategy to regain control. Despite military successes, the widespread devastation and human suffering in conflict zones foster deep-seated grievances and pose challenges to lasting peace.

China's diplomatic card aims to stabilize Myanmar through military backing and support for upcoming elections. However, ongoing conflict and the military's brutal tactics suggest long-term grievances and instability. Beijing's stance, centered on avoiding state collapse, aligns with regional interests, yet achieving an enduring political settlement remains elusive.

Key Takeaways

  • Myanmar's military, with Chinese support, retakes key areas like Kyaukme.
  • Support for the junta aims to stabilize trade routes, despite election controversies.
  • China's influence highlights strategic interests and regional stability goals.
