Banking (continued)

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Following on from the Bangkok Bank saga (account freezing), I thought it prudent to open a new account as a backup.

Approached Krungsri on recommendations (from Thai and Falang friends) and despite having  necessary paperwork, was told that they would have to send my passport to head office for ‘security checks’ which might take two months plus to complete.

Wasn't prepared to continue (I couldn’t because I need to extend my visa soon) but would have felt uncomfortable doing that anyway.

Anyone have similar experiences recently (Pattaya area)? Anyone opened a new account with them or other banks on same day without the need to give up PP, first born, etc?

I call BS on this .

No bank would ever need to retain a passport, and I have never heard such a story in my 20 years here.

Definitely stay away from that bank, pure fraud or not wanting the business.

I was told two years ago, at one of their Pattaya branches, that I could open a bank account with a long-term visa, passport, and driving licence.

Opened a Krungsri account on my own some weeks ago.

Not in Pattaya but upcountry.

Was a lengthy procedure due to broken English/Thai.

Biggest hurdle was tax questions. Still surprised it worked on first attempt (originally I only wanted to check what they need).

I am on one year extension, have yellow book and pink card. Have other accounts at Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn.

Next week I will drain most of my money from Bangkok Bank to Kasikorn.
