During an international beauty pageant in Bangkok on October 18, there was a mix-up when Miss Grand Panama, Isamar Herrera, mistakenly stepped forward after mishearing the announcement for the Top 20 finalists. The actual finalist was Miss Grand Paraguay, Cecilia Romero. The incident occurred in the bustling atmosphere of Thailand's capital and was quickly addressed by host Matthew Deane.

The lively event saw Herrera confidently moving to the front, only for Deane to gently correct the error by clarifying, “I announced Miss Grand Paraguay.” With grace, Herrera returned to her spot, and Miss Paraguay moved forward. Deane explained the confusion by mentioning the overwhelming noise from the crowd of international fans.

Despite the slip-up, Herrera handled the situation with composure. She acknowledged the mistake and emphasized the importance of recognizing others' success, stating, “These things happen. It was a mistake, and this is a competition. You have to know how to lose and recognise the triumph of others.” This moment drew parallels to the 2015 Miss Universe error by Steve Harvey, who mistakenly crowned the wrong contestant.

Ultimately, the pageant concluded with Miss Grand Philippines, Emma Tiglao, being crowned by Christine Opiaza. This win marked the first consecutive victory for the Philippines in this competition. Steve Harvey has previously referred to his own similar mistake as the most challenging moment in his career.

Although Herrera's error did not escalate to the level of widespread notoriety, her dignified response was praised. It highlighted the importance of maintaining grace under pressure, an essential quality in beauty pageants.

Key Takeaways

  • A mix-up at a global beauty pageant saw Miss Panama mistakenly step forward as a finalist.
  • Similar to a past Miss Universe incident, the situation was quickly corrected, maintaining the event's flow.
  • Miss Grand Philippines achieved a back-to-back win, an unprecedented success for the country.
