A baggage handler at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi has been accused of stealing VND50 million (US$1,898) from a passenger's checked luggage. The cash was reportedly taken during a flight from Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. The suspect, Tran Anh Phuong Vu, 26, allegedly exploited a security lapse to commit the theft on September 17.

Authorities revealed that Vu, who is an employee of an airline's baggage service, rifled through the bag while it was being handled at Tan Son Nhat airport. After the flight arrived in Hanoi and the passenger discovered the money missing, an immediate report was filed with the airport police. Following an investigation at Noi Bai, Vu was identified as the culprit, and the money was recovered from him.

Vu resides in Ho Chi Minh City, and the case has now been forwarded to the city’s police for further investigation. This incident highlights serious issues regarding baggage handling and airport security protocols in Vietnam. Experts in aviation security suggest that airlines intensify oversight of staff and security procedures to prevent such occurrences.

Passengers and authorities alike are calling for strengthened surveillance and better training to ensure such cases are minimized in the future. This incident may prompt other airports to review their baggage handling practices as a preventive measure.

Looking ahead, the outcome of the investigation by HCMC police will be closely monitored. Measures taken as a result of this case could influence regulatory changes in the aviation sector in Vietnam to tighten security and ensure passenger safety.

Puttting money in checked baggage. They should charge the pax with wasting police time.

The handler must have completed a training course at LHR.
