And so many farangs will not have mixed socially with such women and many are forced to go for the low hanging fruit, their mates do the same, they stick together and only experience that circle of friends and so that becomes their view if Thailand.

Some farangs in order to hide the fact they have a much younger beautiful Thai woman who are with them as they support her, her family, extended family cover up by stating all Thai women are like that.

But I have said this sort of thing many times on this blog as have you, it is a waste of time as we will just be called dillusional or liars, but they do make me laugh.

I depends on how good your hearing is, can you hear the conversations from 1000 metres away, or do you go and stand outside all of the houses one by one so you can hear all of the conversations going on on a daily basis as only then would you know what they were all talking about which seems unlikely.

There are about 350 new houses on this gated site in Kathu Phuket, I can only hear what the adjacent house neighbours are saying when they are in their gardens, they are usually looking after their kids or talking to their husbands and wives, no mention of the stuff your say.

We all have opinions based on our personal experience. You have yours, BritManToo has his, I have mine. None of us can know everything, but the tendency is that we extrapolate what we see, even if that is unfair or inaccurate.

My view is probably a tad too cynical.

 

I was once a member of the Diplomatic Community here. That gave me access to all levels of society, including the elite in government, business and the military. Maybe I did not get a complete picture, but I did not see any moral high ground occupied by the elite, male or female. While I’m sure there are men and women here as pure as the driven snow, that was not my experience. Of course, nothing of this is unique to Thailand, as is abundantly clear with the US release of the Epstein Files. Cynic that I am, I believe one is more likely to find admirable morality at the lowest level of any society, rather than at the top, where privilege and entitlement often warp behavior.

 

One experience stands out. I attended a party at the-then Prime Minister’s residence in honor of the golfer Tiger Woods. The crowd was a who’s who of hi-so Thai society. I saw many mothers, bedecked in fancy jewelry and wearing designer fashions, trying to push their daughters on Tiger. Tiger got so tried of the onslaught I heard him say, “[Eff] this sh!t; get my car.” He left early, leaving mothers and daughters adrift and disappointed.

I was not talking of the top end of Thai society directly, I was talking of the professional class who are self made, or women who have made their own money through hard work, these women go for guys on a similar level as is the case the world over, and in general the same age more or less.

I have also mixed with the top end and found them similar to professional types of people, there are exceptions in all cases but exceptions do not make the rule, for example the ex vice prime minister of Thailand was at my wedding reception in the Dusit Thani hotel in Bangkok as he was the uncle of my then wife and made a speech on our behalf, also as I graduated from Oxford University I am a member of the Oxbridge group in Thailand where I meet up with other Thai Oxford graduates once a year. Not showing off, I am just qualifying my comments with facts.

I also know Thai women who came from nothing and made their own money/property from hard work and determination.

I include those as part of the self made well off group too, my fist comment on this subject earlier was in defence of the stupid comment which stated all Asian women can be bought and are only with guys as they want the money, they believe that is that is the only type of people them mix with.

And true, some mothers wish to push their daughters onto rich well to do guys, that happens all over the world but it does not mean it is the rule, most parents want what is best for their children.

I remember working in New Jersey for a year as a software engineer, I was buying something in a chemist shop and the girl serving me started chatting to me due to my English accent, she asked about my job and even asked about my income, when I told her she asked me if I was looking for a girlfriend, I laughed.

But I do not think that all American women are after guys money based on just one or two incidents like that.

By the way ,Tiger Woods mother was Thai, she died last year aged 80.

Since this 230-odd page thread has covered most everything save for the Big Bang, I'll drift a little here and there....

Tiger's Mom was actually half Thai and half Chinese. His Dad was a quarter Chinese, which means the predominant Asian ethnicity of Tiger is Chinese, not Thai. For some reason, the Chinese never claimed him as Thailand did. I don't think it's solely because of his Mom's citizenship.

As I noted, I'm a bit of a cynic. I appreciate there are some self-made types here and everywhere else, but my experience has been that once great wealth and position come to a person, he or she changes. A sense of entitlement and being "above" things like morality and law often blossom. I grew up very middle class, but my intellect and athleticism got me into my Ivy undergrad and Stanford for my MBA, and eventually (with a bit of a detour that really jaded me) to a hedge fund desk. In no area of my education or career did I see superior morality as a hallmark trait of any group. Some good, some bad, probably leaning toward selfishness. In fact, the wealthier I and my colleagues got, the worse we became. I left the field when I came to admit I was becoming an entitled a-hole.

With my "undeserved" wealth, I spent some time using it to try to level some playing fields in undeveloped parts of the world. I was exposed to true salt-of-the-Earth types of people. Of course not all the desperately poor are noble, but the ones who are have made a conscious choice to be good. I have great admiration for such people, doubting I would have had the goodness to be them, had I lived their lives. Lots of folks who have everything, even if hard-won, rather than given or inherited, can drift into a kind of dissolute state, where they feel no guilt no matter what things---sometimes depraved---in which they engage. Maybe not as depraved as the horrific film Salo, but depravity is a lot more common than most of us would like to think.

Maybe selfishness and being mercenary are hard wired into our genes, as from a Darwinian perspective, those would seem to be traits selected into the species for survival's sake.

I have come to the conclusion, perhaps incorrectly, that goodness is quite rare. Most people are not good. Some have been driven by circumstances, some are just bad to the bone. I don't know the percentages, but if someday AI or something tells us that 5% of people are good, 20% are bad, and the rest are just self-centered and somewhat mercenary, it would not surprise me.

Again, we're all influenced by our own experiences.

beside this (again just my experience) many Asians - including and maybe especially the financially independent ones - are more pragmatic, money minded and transactional than in the west when it comes to relationships. More business than minnesang.

Seems like an obsession for some to constantly say there is only the negative aspect of relationship that's seem plausible in your view of everyone else.

My experience, those who are married to some Educated lady, still buying the food and pays the major bills, and also buying houses, motorbikes, and pays for holidays.
