Police in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Phimai district arrested a 60-year-old man who deliberately smashed a bank’s glass door, claiming he wanted to go to jail to escape mounting personal debt. The incident occurred around 20:00 on November 2, when officers from Phimai Police Station responded to reports of property damage at a local bank.

Upon arrival, officers found the man pacing in front of the building, admitting he had broken the door and declaring, “I want to be jailed. I am in heavy debt.” The suspect’s identity has not been released. The bank’s front glass door was shattered, but no theft or injuries were reported.

A metal rod believed to have been used in the act was discovered near the entrance and the man’s pink Honda motorcycle, parked outside the bank, was seized as evidence. Police confirmed that no further damage occurred inside the bank.

The suspect was detained and taken to Phimai Police Station for questioning to verify his personal background and motives. Officers said legal proceedings will follow, with potential charges for property destruction under consideration.

The unusual case has drawn attention to growing financial hardship among Thais struggling with personal debt, a problem that has worsened in recent years. Local authorities have urged citizens facing financial distress to seek assistance from debt relief programmes rather than resorting to criminal acts.
