If You Had to leave SE Asia, Where Would you go and Why?

Featured Replies

American retiree. Smoke weed. Do nothing. This would be commencing in January.

The requirements are easy Visas, cool stuff and stuff to do during the day, a nice nightlife scene, loads of good cheap public transport and within 3-5 hours of  Frankfurt on the spur of a moment. It would only be for a year or so unless sooner expired by the Reaper or by a Visa, I can either go to my place in the US or vacation here.. The arthritis MANDATES warmth, in fact the ability to walk around all day in gym shorts is a plus.

Ive looked at these places that are still in the running:

Crete, Antalya, Batumi, Lisbon/Spain, Albania/Croatia.

All have their advantages and disadvantages. Crete can be full of rowdy Brits and I would have to buy a car, Batumi full of rowdy Turks. Albania is...Albania. Visas are a pain and limited in EU dont need a Visa at all in Batumi. Every Turk I have met says dont go to Turkey, so they all go to Batumi. I have to consider weed friendliness.

Ive eliminated Israel/Dubai (too expensive and too many Israelis and Arabs), Odessa (obviously), Baku (nasty weather), Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica (nice to visit but not to live if you aint a local)

anywhere in France, Tblisi (weather), Northern Italy (weather), etc.

Any suggestions that I missed? Anyone lived in Trieste? Or Trabzond?

I'd start by googling "places to live with easy entry & resident requirements".

Gee. Thats helpful LOL

If I were to move back to Europe, I think Portugal would be my #1 choice.

Though recreational usage of Cannabis isn't legal, possession of small amounts (up to ten days of personal use) has been decriminalized.

Probably right where we are now....We have an RV & car stored in Texas.....

A ready made "home" all outfitted and ready to go on adventures, or use stationary....

I no longer have use for big homes or big land which end up needing 365 days of maintenance that I don't enjoy.....

I hold on to them at minimal cost to have a landing spot, if needed.....

All I have to do is show up, hook up, buy groceries, and make a few arrangements.....

At 78 I see no joy getting, equipping, & furnishing another house....

Brazil, ideally. I have some friends there who tell me that anal is a given among the women.

But: No tax treaty with the US and high marginal rates. So I'd have to do six months a year in Argentina.

I was saying elsewhere that I'd never go back to New York, but maybe that could be my other six months instead of Argentina.

Tblisi was very uncrowded and cheap when i went about 8 years ago, but it's full of Russian draft dodgers now. Armenia might be worth a look, but def a downer vibe when I was there. And very religious, hard to undress women. Albania has likewise been over-exposed.

I liked, but didn't love Mexico City as a retirement option. Same with Panama City, to which I give a slight edge. Crime kills Latin America for me.
