Hackers Arrested for Attacks on Government Websites

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has dismantled a hacker network responsible for cyberattacks on several government websites, where online gambling banners were illegally posted. The operation uncovered links to a major criminal organisation with money circulating in excess of 20 billion baht. The attacks disrupted access to official online services and undermined public trust in state information systems.

The investigation was launched following orders from Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Ruttphol Naowarat to combat online crime and illegal gambling. DSI’s Technology and Information Division traced a sophisticated hacking campaign that targeted government web servers in Trang, Phuket, Ratchaburi and Amnat Charoen provinces. The hackers allegedly inserted malicious scripts that redirected visitors from official websites to illegal gambling platforms to generate backlinks and improve the sites’ rankings on Google Search results.

According to DSI, the manipulation misled citizens into believing that state websites endorsed gambling and prevented normal access to public services. The hackers used over 100 “mule” bank accounts to circulate funds from gambling operations and scams. Investigators found that these transactions also passed through cryptocurrency exchanges linked to scam networks, in violation of laws covering illegal gambling, money laundering, unauthorised computer access and data alteration.

Authorities have so far arrested 16 suspects from a total of 23 identified individuals. The most recent arrests, made in Phuket, involved a 23-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man who allegedly managed the network’s financial operations and controlled mule accounts. DSI continues to trace additional suspects under existing warrants and is expanding its probe into the higher-level organisers behind the network.

The DSI said the case highlights the increasingly advanced tactics used by cybercriminals to exploit weaknesses in public-sector cybersecurity. The agency affirmed its commitment to pursuing those responsible and strengthening cooperation among relevant authorities to prevent similar attacks in the future. It also urged all government agencies to urgently review and reinforce their information-security systems to safeguard against further cyber intrusions.

Key Takeaways

• DSI uncovered a hacker network that attacked multiple Thai government websites and posted illegal gambling banners.

• The operation revealed over 20 billion baht in money transfers through more than 100 mule accounts and crypto exchanges.

• Sixteen suspects have been arrested, with further investigations under way to reach the ringleaders.

BEYOND stupid! Taunting the gubmint with gambling advertisements?

DSI is a reality, you buffoons. I don't personally know what their level of expertise is, but they seem to catch some bad guys.
