Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link Introduces Contactless Payments

The Airport Rail Link (ARL) has launched a new EMV Contactless ticketing system across all stations from 8 November 2025. Passengers can now pay fares by tapping any contactless credit or debit card at the gates, in addition to existing Smart Pass and token options, making airport commutes faster and more convenient.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) and Asia Era One Co., Ltd. (AERA 1), the ARL operator. Director-General Pichet Kunadhamraks said the system represents a major step forward in Thailand’s rail payment technology, aiming to improve service standards and promote daily rail usage.

The ARL operates eight stations along a 28.6-kilometer route connecting Suvarnabhumi Airport with Phaya Thai Station in central Bangkok. As a key link between the city and Thailand’s main international airport, the line helps reduce urban traffic congestion and improves accessibility for both commuters and international travellers.

Experts suggest that modern payment systems such as EMV Contactless can increase passenger convenience, speed up boarding times, and encourage more people to opt for public transport over private vehicles. The system also aligns with global trends toward digital and cashless transit solutions.

DRT and AERA 1 plan to monitor usage patterns and collect passenger feedback to optimise service efficiency. The new payment option may be expanded to other rail lines in the future, further modernising Thailand’s public transport network.

Key Takeaways

• Passengers can now use contactless credit or debit cards on all ARL stations starting 8 November 2025.

• The EMV Contactless system complements existing Smart Pass and token options.

• The upgrade aims to improve convenience, speed, and adoption of public rail transport.

Good news. ARL and MRT. Now need the BTS to follow suit. So annoying carrying three cards.

Yeah, and of course the BTS also has the two lines with the highest ridership in the system - I hope they eventually join the contactless club 🙄

Sounds good, but I'm currently ignorant / inexperienced (e.g. "contactless", etc).  I visit Bangkok occasionally so am curious procedure & how to participate.

Specifically, I have an atm debit card with my Kasikorn bank acct.  Will that work, & if so how do I set it up to use it?

I just used the ARL, contactless. Two dedicated gates. Tap your card on the reader, the screen goes green and you walk through. Tap again at the other end on your way out. There are no gates to open, they are just left open: tap, get green, walk through. No need to set anything up.

Having said that I didn't notice if they accept debit cards, I know the MRT doesn't, it has to be a credit card.

I will check specifically for that later on my way home.

Reporting back - came home and used my Bangkok Bank ATM debit card. All good, so a step above the MRT which only accepts credit cards.

So to @OneZero, you have no need to prep anything, just go and use your Kasikorn card, it should be fine.

Thank you very much for your effort to assist me.  🙂
