Three Myanmar workers cleaning a hydrogen sulphide chemical rank at a palm oil company in Plai Phraya district, Krabi, suffered gas inhalation on 14 November, leading to two deaths and one injury. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the workers fell into the tank, managing to rescue one man alive while two others remained trapped inside. Officials later confirmed that the two trapped workers were recovered, but were already deceased.

The incident occurred when the workers entered the tank to carry out routine cleaning and were exposed to excessive build up of H₂S (hydrogen sulphide). The victims were identified as Ko Pyin, 22, who survived, while the deceased were named as Chay Lin Aung, 24 and Kyaw Lin Aw, 25. The surviving worker was transported to Plai Phraya Hospital for urgent treatment.

Rescue teams used specialised equipment, SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) and rope rescue techniques to retrieve the trapped workers, reflecting the hazardous nature of the environment inside the chemical tank. Local police, forensic officers, hospital staff and officials from the provincial labour welfare and industrial departments jointly attended the scene as part of the emergency response. Their coordinated efforts focused on both rescue operations and securing the area for investigation.

Authorities have begun a formal inquiry into the cause of the incident, including whether safety protocols were followed and if protective equipment had been provided. Provincial officials emphasised the need to understand the conditions that led to the fatal exposure in order to prevent a repeat occurrence. The palm oil company’s compliance with industrial safety regulations is expected to come under close scrutiny.

Matichon reported that investigators will conduct autopsies on the two deceased workers at Plai Phraya Hospital, alongside a detailed site evaluation. Findings from the ongoing investigation will inform future safety measures and potential legal action if negligence is identified. Labour and industrial authorities are expected to issue recommendations once the inquiry concludes.

I don't know if one can even purchase a simple gas detector in Thailand....!

I almost took a job, cleaning out chemical tanks, as the pay offered was a little too good to be true.   What could possibly go wrong ... gave it a pass.

Also left a decent paying job at a flux factory, for same reason, after another directed a fan toward me, to vent his work area, and felt like I was breathing fire, and fried my lungs.   We had chemicals that ate the gloves we were using :cheesy:

When I went to quit, they offered me a huge raise to stay, as it seemed I , along with one other, were  the only 2 that could mix the one batch correctly, go figure.  They couldn't offer me enough to work around idiots.

Hydrogen sulfide is nasty stuff.

It's heavier than air as well as being poisonous, in low concentrations it stinks of rotten eggs, in high concentrations it overloads the sense of smell and you can't smell it!

Those poor chaps probably didn't even smell impending death 😞

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Its not an unusual industrial accident throughout the world, RIP and prayers for the survivor

Thai safety at work again!!  was there a HSE employed by the company NO!!!  where they safety procedures NO !!! where the men trained NO!!!!  Do they know what a confined space is NO !!!
