So Trump wants to kill Obamacare and replace it with what?

Featured Replies

Trump and republicans have been trying to kill Obamacare for many years.

They are getting close to succeeding.

A brief simplified history as I see it.

The original Obamacare which ironically was based on a republican plan (Romney) required that all Americans have health insurance. So if you didn't have it from Medicare, Medicaid, or employer, you were required to buy a plan and Obamacare offered plans with required minimum benefits from private insurers, and subsidies based on your income. If no insurance, then a penalty. The way that did work was to push a large pool of younger/healthy people into buying insurance lowering the rates for all.  Also revolutionary was that insurance companies had to accept all regardless of medical conditions.

Then -- republicans killed the mandate and penalties. This meant the pool over time became a lot older and sicker.

Then -- to keep Obamacare alive, the government needed to take a bigger role in subsidies for lower income people. Higher income people with less or no subsidies complained their rates were too damn high, and they weren't wrong.

So now the subsidies have been a provisional thing in constant risk of being stopped.

Lower income people without subsidies will simply be forced to drop their insurance

This was the major thing the democrats wanted to get out of the recent shutdown, to continue Obamacare subsidies, but they failed.

Obamacare rates are now set to double, triple, or even more  for lower income people without the subsidies.

So Trump has suggested, forget about subsidies, basically finally fully and officially kill off Obamacare, and just send some cash to the people. He's toyed with the idea of calling this Trumpcare (of course he would). Trump says with the money the people can buy their insurance directly on the open market.

But he leaves out a massively important detail. In a free market people with preexisting conditions even if they are accepted at all (up to government requirement) will be charged massive rates obviously completely unaffordable for most.

So my conclusion is that Trumpcare is really not a plan at all.

It's throwing people to the wolves.

Be healthy and be rich, or die.

To simplify this, I didn't talk about Medicaid and Medicaid Expansion (not all states). That's really a separate topic and also Trump's "big beautiful bill" has attacked Medicaid funding in a very major way as well.

It is true that Obamacare after being degraded so radically by republicans over the years is not at all great. But it's better than nothing!

Trump has been attacking the entire health care system in the USA, apart from the private healthcare system.

There is a growing, some say alarming, shortage of health care professionals in the public health care system in the USA, made worse by Trump's actions this year.

Actually, the opposite is true. It was massively improved by the Biden administration and was made a lot more affordable for middle class people.

Thanks for that but I'll never understand why the USA couldn't have universal coverage such as in Canada and the UK.
