A 77-year-old man and his 43-year-old daughter-in-law were killed after a four-year-old breeding buffalo went on a rampage in a rice field in Lam Plai Mat district, Buriram, on 15 November 2025. Police and rescue workers arrived at the scene, a paddy field about two kilometres from Ban Nong Kung village, to find both victims suffering severe injuries caused by the animal’s sharp horns. The woman was rushed to Lam Plai Mat Hospital but died shortly afterwards.

The buffalo, named “Chao Kong”, was found nearby lying in mud after the attack and was subsequently secured by villagers. Officers from Lam Plai Mat Police Station were alerted by the assistant village headman at around 16:00 and coordinated with Amarin Thai Disaster Response Rescue Unit to investigate. The victims were identified as Somchit Chinson, 77, and his daughter-in-law, Phairoh Namkam, 43.

Somchit was found lying on his back with a deep puncture wound to the neck and a severe abdominal injury believed to have been inflicted by the animal’s horn and was pronounced dead at the scene. Phairoh was discovered unconscious about 20 metres away with multiple bruises, indicating she had been struck or trampled before collapsing in the rice plants. Witnesses reported that both had been in the fields shortly before the attack occurred.

A local resident, Wasan, 37, said he rushed to the scene after being informed by villagers that a buffalo had gored two people. He found Phairoh unconscious and assisted in transporting her to hospital. He later learned that the victim had succumbed to her injuries.

Chao Kong is a black male breeding buffalo standing about 160 centimetres tall and weighing between 700 and 800 kilograms, with long, pointed horns. Villagers restrained the animal and tied it to a post in its pen after the incident. Some locals speculated that the buffalo may have been agitated because it had not been taken out for mating, as its owner had been busy during the rice-harvesting season.

Khaosod reported that the victim’s wife, Yont Chinson, 59, said her son had purchased Chao Kong when it was nine months old for 63,000 baht to generate additional income through breeding services. She explained that villagers had not recently hired the animal due to the ongoing harvest, which may have contributed to its restlessness. She added that she would no longer keep the buffalo, saying anyone who wanted to take it away could do so, as it had caused two deaths.

No good for breeding, has a mental illness.

Time for the chopping board, more 69 baht steaks for the 3rd road restaurants.

R.I.P.  to the unfortunate victims.

Buffalo needs to be on the BBQ.

The buffalo was doing what buffaloes do. Sometimes things happen and there's nobody to blame.  Bulls at home will do the same thing under those circumstances.  The animal should be bred to continue strong lines.  Look at what's happened to the people of the West; the weak/submissive men were permitted to breed and the results are not good.
