Thailand is witnessing a troubling rise in seasonal illnesses, with influenza cases soaring to 161,940 between October 19 and November 15, 2025. This surge has raised the total number of cases this year to 940,869, alongside 100 fatalities predominantly among unvaccinated, elderly individuals with underlying health conditions. Health officials urge the public to stay vigilant and emphasize the importance of vaccinations to mitigate further risk.

The rise in illnesses coincides with recent weather changes, intensifying conditions favorable for the spread of influenza. Deputy Government Spokesperson Airin Phanrit pointed out significant risk factors related to recent deaths, noting that 94% were unvaccinated individuals, the majority with pre-existing health issues such as kidney disease and hypertension. The median age of those who died was 61, highlighting the vulnerability of older age groups.

Besides influenza, there are increases in other illnesses, including 62,157 cases of diarrhea, 35,953 of pneumonia, 9,698 of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and 8,375 of food poisoning, indicating a broader public health challenge. Although there was a slight decline in November's overall influenza numbers, cluster outbreaks in enclosed settings like prisons and schools are on the rise, necessitating targeted interventions.

Experts underscore the dominance of the A/H3N2 strain, constituting 76% of reported flu cases, trailed by A/H1N1 and Influenza B strains. Children aged 5–9 years exhibit the highest infection rates per 100,000 people, urging specific preventive measures in environments involving younger populations to curb transmission.

Looking ahead, health authorities advise the public to remain proactive in receiving vaccinations, especially among at-risk groups - the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. Continued monitoring of influenza patterns and effective public health responses will be critical to managing the escalating situation, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • 94% of influenza fatalities involved unvaccinated individuals with health conditions.
  • Influenza cases have surpassed 940,000 this year, with significant impact on vulnerable groups.
  • Clusters in enclosed spaces are increasing, necessitating focused health measures.

So they caught the flu because they are unhealthy. It would be interesting to know what their health problems are.

Calling it "panic-news" is a slight exaggeration. Same as "flu explodes".  I consider it a reminder for those who believe in flu shots.  I do.

For the doubters, there was an article in the Bangkok Post yesterday about a similar "explosion" in flu numbers in Japan.

Let us see if any other (northern hemisphere) countries start reporting similar "explosions".

Bit sensationalist. It’s normal among populations. Impaired immune systems through over medication, poor diet, bad air, lack of fitness etc don’t help. Not an anti-vaxer as have had both flu and Covid jabs and found flu way worse than Delta. But after real issues with Covid jabs, will not be doing anymore. If my immune system can’t handle it, then so be it. Each to their own. Perhaps the aged and vulnerable should take it up, but many are over government bodies pushing for these things. As with the pincushion folk on here, don’t admonish people when they make that choice.

And absolutely no mention of Covid. Still it's better be safe than sorry so hurry up and get those boosters and remember to wear your face masks 24/7.

That was the first thing I thought.   Could it be possible that those impaired immune systems were a product of actually being vaccinated…..just not with the latest flu vaccine.  🤔

Then again.  Maybe not.  Had they not had the MRNA juice we all know that…..say it together now….

It could have been worse!”

Yeah….I know.   Some people might say…

”How could it be worse?   They’re dead!!!”

I have never used vaccination for influenza in my whole life, and I never got sick (not counting common cold).

100 deaths out of 940,869 cases of the flu amongst mostly unvaccinated.  Horrific numbers so hurry and get vaccinated people before they run out.

It’s the same in Korea as well. Big number of cases in the bigger cities. IDK for sure, but our doc said it was a bad strain of the flu. I’ll take my chances with the flu shot — especially if it lessens the severity

You forget, since covid travel restrictions were removed every year since tourism has dropped every year by approx 7% which means, so far over 20% down on pre covid numbers...so not just seasonal changes.

The Cleveland Clinic study (April 2025) analyzed data from the 2024–2025 influenza season.

- -  a "negative vaccine effectiveness" of approximately -27%"

Key Details of the Report

  • The Study: Titled roughly "Effectiveness of the Influenza Vaccine During the 2024-2025 Respiratory Viral Season" (or similar variations in preprints).

  • The Finding: The researchers observed that among their cohort of 53,402 healthcare employees, those who received the flu vaccine had a higher risk of testing positive for influenza compared to those who were unvaccinated.

  • The Number: The statistical analysis showed a Hazard Ratio (HR) of 1.27, which translates to a 27% increased risk of identifying an influenza infection in the vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group during that specific season. This corresponds to a "negative vaccine effectiveness" of approximately -27%.

    Edit:/ clarity

The clinic in my Bangkok neighborhood treats bad cases of the flu by injecting the sick patient with the latest flu vaccine. The doctor there heard the shot helps your body fight the flu, so she uses it as a treatment. People really need to get past their mystical belief in vaccines because doing this (injecting three or four additional flu strains into the body when it is already sick) is deeply detrimental.

My flu vaccination many years ago actually gavee the worst flu I've ever had...3 times pver the next 2 years. No more flu vax for 5 years since, and not even a cold since then.

My wife is 62 with an impaired immune system. When we lived in the UK our Doctor always strongly advised her to get a winter Flu jab every October/November. We saw a Doctor over here about 6 weeks ago and asked if she should get a Flu jab. He said wait until April as it would be more beneficial against new strains being seen now. He knew she has a weakened immune system as well.

Yes,the temperature drops a few degrees and all the locals get sick...I got caught out in Pai one year and it dropped to 13c overnight. I couldn't sleep it was so cold. No extra blankets in the room either. In the morning the old HD,s barley turned over.

Same here...a former employer tried to force me to take the flu shot.I refused and they weren't happy about it. But we were in Erbil ,Iraq and a big hassle to get rid of me.555  The rest of the sheep all complied..

Influenza vaccination or Covid vaccination?

I don't recall ever having a flu vaccine in my life, though I have gotten the flu a few times it's not something that I concern myself with to a significant degree. Having said that I'm far more concerned about getting the flu then I am getting covid, as the flu can be a lot more potent.

I don't know what the normal numbers are but we're getting into flu season and I would expect that there would be a spike. Also they're giving us very low information about those who did expire from the disease, they're likely old, infirm and on their way out. When you get to a certain age the Grim Reaper is going to come calling and something's going to take you.
