  1. Pick a VPN provider
    • Choose one that has Australian servers and supports router installation (e.g., NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark).
    • Make sure they allow streaming—some VPNs are blocked by Netflix/Prime.
  2. Check your router type
    • Log into your router (you said you can already do this).
    • Look for “VPN” or “OpenVPN” settings.
    • If your router doesn’t support VPN directly, you may need to install custom firmware (like DD‑WRT or OpenWRT) or buy a VPN‑ready router.
  3. Download VPN configuration files
    • Your VPN provider will give you files or a username/password to connect to their Australian server.
    • These are usually called OpenVPN config files.
  4. Upload to your router
    • In the router’s VPN settings, upload the config file or enter the server details.
    • Save and connect.
  5. Test it
    • Go to whatismyipaddress.com and check if your IP shows as Australia.
    • If yes, you’re good to go—Netflix/Prime should now show Australian content.

Express VPN can be installed on a router.

Can access Aus.

You can get Netflix etc thru a Real Debris account on an alternate platform Kodi.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an option for you to consider.

I have the AIS Android streaming box, I downloaded the NordVPN app from the Google Store, once installed I re-visited the Google Store and downloaded all of the Aussie FTA stations eg 9Now, 7Plus etc - works well although 9Now is a bit glitchy at times...

Since the op admits to basic IT skills why install a VPN on a router at all, most people like the last post just install a VPN on the devices connected to the router.

I have the NordVPN app running on my Chromecast; it works (functionally) well. But Netflix is adept at blocking my VPN use. Prime, HBO, Disney, Apple, less so.

The nice thing about running the VPN on a device is that other devices on your LAN can function without a VPN.

Casting from a phone (on your local LAN) to a VPN-attached device is not possible (they're on different networks), same for the reverse.

I do not know if you can set up SSIDs specifically for the VPN service?

I found running a VPN on a router to be a nearly full-time job.

Some routers support VPN out of the box.

Unless the device you are casting from is on the same VPN as the VPN-attached device you are casting to, same for the reverse.

Not true. Most VPN software has settings to allow access to the local network while connected to the VPN.

Can you give some examples of the settings that allow this functionality?

I use Nord.  Their site recommends specific routers and their Cust Svc can help guide you thru setup.   A shop in TukCom ordered it, but they couldn't set up with a MacBook...those shops on the street outside TukCom are all PC/Android shops, and they have limited Apple OS knowledge.  My set up works great, and no problems watching Netflix/Prime or any other platform.

I don't think this is correct.

Can you give an example of how you've accomplished this?

Two separate VPN connections will be on different networks.

I used to use nordvpn. It was

nordvpn set lan-discovery enable

I now use torguard. It's

lan bypass

Thanks for your detailed reply, I did look into it, looks reasonably doable but putting our whole system on a VPN is probably going to mess up  others in the house using the internet for differing reasons (business, banking etc). Do appreciate the effort you put in though, thanks again 🙂

No sweat....I've looked at doing it a few times and chickened out.

I just use Express VPN on all the individual devices.

I use an Amazon Firestick on my TV. I downloaded the VPN onto it and I access everything in Australia no problems.  Easier than putting on the router.

To configure your router as a VPN, you'll need a router at the host end configured to pair with your router.
And the upstream speed needs to be as fast as your dowstream speed.
Use a service.
