A woman riding a motorbike was killed after being struck by a Mercedes-Benz at the Thaphra Tunnel, Bangkok, early on 24 November 2025. The rider, 56-year-old Yupin Nansunee, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency resuscitation efforts.

The incident occurred at 00:30 on the Thaphra Tunnel off-ramp on Ratchadaphisek Road, heading towards Charansanitwong Road, in Wat Thaphra, Bangkok Yai district. Police and volunteers from Poh Teck Tung Foundation responded to the scene, where the motorbike was found damaged some distance approx from the Mercedes-Benz, which had front-end damage.

Eyewitnesses reported that the motorbike had changed from lane 2 to lane 3 before the tunnel when the white Mercedes, travelling at high speed, collided forcefully. The impact sent the rider airborne, causing her head to strike the road. One witness said the vehicle dragged the motorbike nearly 100 metres before stopping, adding that poor lighting made the scene particularly hazardous.

The 30-year-old female driver of the Mercedes remained at the scene, visibly shaken and cooperated with police. Authorities took her for a blood alcohol test as part of the ongoing investigation. The body of the deceased has been sent to Siriraj Hospital for forensic examination.

Officials emphasised the dangers of high-speed driving in poorly lit areas and noted the incident underscores the need for careful navigation in tunnels. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including potential traffic violations or negligence.

Matichon reported that authorities will review CCTV footage and witness statements, with legal proceedings expected to follow once all evidence is collected. The investigation will determine responsibility and whether criminal charges will be filed against the Mercedes driver.

'Officials emphasised the dangers of high-speed driving in poorly lit areas '!!

Couldn't those same officials ensure that there is adequate lighting in that tunnel? I'm sorry, but this is a city, and it's unacceptable to have a poorly lit tunnel.

Please note that in Hua Hin, the tunnel under the runway is well lit, so why can't this be done in Bangkok?

Well until then take it easy on the roads and drive more cautiously.

Motorbikes are prohibited from most traffic tunnels.  Does anybody know if this tunnel is so posted?

Why do they care what sort of car they are driving they killed someone it shouldnt matter or is it a exuse

This topic is one of the most important ones to avoid getting involved in at all costs, especially with how the normal insurance works here (not the expensive one)... be super careful on these roads, let the idiots go, be defensive, anticipate moron behaviour, and don't drive fast or recklessly, as it is just too much trouble to get involved in a crash. Driving late at night is also a gamble on many fronts.

“Authorities took her for a blood alcohol test as part of the ongoing investigation.”

Can’t they know the result at the spot?

It’s just a narrative that plays into the stereotype of drivers of high brand cars being arrogant, unfeeling and driving recklessly at high speed.

In reality, the brand of car has no impact on the cause of the accident or who’s fault it was.

RIP to the lady who died.

Breatherlyzer yes. Blood test no

i am truly sorry for this lady. But given how people ride motorcycles here and the almost general absence of any knowledge about "road codes/rules" (the ones you are supposed to learn when passing your driving license...),  i wouldn't blame the mercedes driver right away.

Exactly what I was thinking. I have been waiting for accidents like this, every time I drive in to a tunnel in Bangkok there are hords of motorbikes driving and of course ignoring the signs. Annoying and dangerous.

Looks like her head nutted the windscreen first...
