Will this winter of 2025 get cold enough for gloves and mittens?

Dear Folks,

Do you recall the winter of 2014, here in Thailand?

The winter of 2014 was simply frigid, and there is no other word to describe it.

At that time, I recall Thai friends of mine who were extremely worried for the elderly.

Just go back and read the reports of the time.

This year, IMHO, seems to be shaping up in much the same way.

Already this November, the temps have begun to dip.

And the cold winds from the polar region, probably due to Global Warming, are now blowing strong.

Many of us, if we live close to the universities, will see young coeds removing their skirts.

And, opting for long trousers, instead.  This is always the first hardship we must face, due to any frigid year, in Chiang Mai.

So my question is:

Is it possible to buy either winter gloves or mittens here in Thailand?

I have not seen them for sale in most local stores.

And, buying them from sites such as Amazon USA will require a very high import tax, since textiles are taxed more than computer components, for example.

Fortunately, we can expect that these anticipated severe cold snaps will not last long.

There is one possible solution which I resorted to in 2014.

During that year, both I and some of my friends would wear two pairs of woolen socks on our hands, and two pairs on our feet, too.

This is a very effective solution for staying warm, for those who might not have access to the more traditional mittens and gloves, when not locally available.

One should never try to light a coal fire inside one’s house.

These unventilated fires are always extremely dangerous.

Yet, when severe cold snaps happen, invariably, there are still those who do not heed the warnings which are always prominently published in the local news.

This evening has been very cold.

If you have many pairs of unworn woolen socks, as do I, then now is the time.

Am I the only one here who has been wearing socks on my hands when the weather turns chilly?

Just some helpful advice.

Regards,

Gamma

Same here.

Freezing this morning, the wife said it was 7 degrees when she went outside and chopped on some grass this morning, 11 degrees when I woke up and now still frigid at 18 degrees.

Did you say:

Chopped some grass?

Or...did you say...

Chomped on some grass?

(Just asking for clarification)

Chopped. She got up at 5am put on some stockings, jeans, long sleeve shirt and two jackets and went outside and chopped down some of the grass under the flood lights.

As far as grass chomping, she’s never done it, though I have used a wheatgrass chomper to make juice and chugged it.

Woke up this morning and it was 13,5 degr.

Great weather for some gardening ... until the sun starts beating down.

If it goes down to 15 we're going to hear the usual reports about monks dying of hypothermia in the middle of the night. Bring out the down filled parkas!

I do indeed remember one year it got  extraordinarily  cold. I guess it was 2014 but will take your word for that.

The central Government of the time issued blankets  via local administrations in an emergency  humanitarian response.

In the very north elderly people died of hypothermia  and apparently so did buffalo and cows. In 2016 there was also a similar but less event.

As is currently the case the days were quite warm by mid afternoon but night time and morning temperatures were  bitterly cold. I improvised hot water bottles from soda bottles inside socks. My wife was amused but did not object !

A elderly female Thai acquaintance from Bangkok did tell me that many years before the temperature in Bangkok fell to below 10 degrees C for several days straight and people died .

Were these 'friends' real or imaginary?

The winter of 2013/2014, it was.

Cold.

The cold began late in 2013.

How can you not even recall this?

Why has my AC compressor stopped working?

Indeed. The year before last we went to North Vietnam early march. I had checked the weather and was supposed to be in 20s. Unfortunately a couple of days before we went a cold front moved in. I hadn't taken much notice of the elevation and where we went, SaPa, was about 5000 feet and in the clouds. We arrived in the evening and it was perishing, about 12 degrees. I  was all for going back down to Hanoi but we would have had to wait till morning so just bought some warmer clothing and stuck it out. In the 3 days we were there, couldn't see across road for the cloud and temps were between 9 and 14 degrees. What was really puzzling was all the restaurants had the windows wide open with the locals sitting eating wearing parkas, really weird.

Last day went down  through the clouds to the station to wait for the train to Hanoi, sat outside basking in the sun with a beer, about 25 degrees and felt like a heat wave.

I recall the cold.

I am old enough to discount exactly which year.

I recall a couple of extra hot ones in similar fashion.

I recall stubbing a toe several times in my life.

I know that at exactly 4.18 am today the temperature inside my house was 15 C so stayed in bed.

Well that settles it then; I'm moving close to the universities.

Try Decathlon.

Think there's a store in Chiang Mai.

Yep! you bet it might get pretty cold...this AM at 4:30, 10 degrees in Sankamphaeng!  BRRR for these old bones for sure!

9 hours ago, GammaGlobulin said:

Probably because you have it set on a lower temperature than it is outside. You cannot cool 16 degree air DOWN to 25!

For the first time ever, I have tried out the HEATING function on my a/c's It seems to work at 28 degrees.

Can you imagine putting your heating on in UK at 28, you'd sweat your bo11ocks off. And your energy bill would kill you.
