Minister Exits Briefing Over Flood Response Questions

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Paradon Prissanananthakul, exited a press conference on November 27 after refusing to address if government delays worsened the impact of recent floods in southern Thailand. The conference aimed to update the public on flood relief efforts, specifically in Hat Yai district. The floods have led to postponed university exams and prompted the establishment of a donation centre at the Royal Thai Air Force Museum.

Paradon, also Director of the Emergency Flood Crisis Operations Centre, specified the centre's role in managing donations and logistics. Items are being delivered using Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft, and there is a need for coconut brooms as waters recede. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul instructed hospitals to speed up victim identification processes and prepare for additional storage.

When questioned about potential government mismanagement, Paradon ended the briefing abruptly. Similar criticisms have been previously dismissed by both Siripong Angkasakulkiat and PM Anutin, who insisted that responses were prompt and residents had been warned. An incident captured on video showed Anutin declining to respond to a victim's concerns during a shelter visit.

Current reports indicate 113 casualties in Hat Yai, though official numbers last confirmed were 55. The flooding is estimated to cause economic damages of 25 billion baht, affecting industries, tourism, and major venues such as the SEA Games, which needed to be moved. Songkhla’s tourism sector alone faces significant losses, with anticipated reductions in Malaysian tourist arrivals.

Looking Ahead, the focus will be on managing economic impacts and recovery efforts. Authorities are likely to face ongoing scrutiny regarding their flood response as the situation stabilizes. Further updates from the Emergency Flood Crisis Operations Centre are anticipated to confirm casualty figures and ongoing aid distribution, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Paradon Prissanananthakul walked out of a press briefing when questioned about government response to floods.
  • Current confirmed flood casualties stand at 55, but unverified reports suggest 113.
  • Economic losses from the floods are predicted to reach 25 billion baht.

What will coconut brooms, and identification of the dead do to stop the floods. Just asking!

Coconut brooms are perfect for cleaning up muddy roads and they are environmentally friendly.

Now Mr Paradorn has to find someone to do the work. Anyone but him.

Maybe some Khmer

Not so many these days with land border crossings closed and thousands of returnees to Cambodia to avoid persecution and intimidation in Thailand. Perhaps Burmese and Laotians?

Thai spouse and I watched a Thai news channel that was covweing the flood aftermath yesterday.  There were a number of different areas shown and we did not see a single relief worker from the government in any of the reports.  Lots of local people cleaning up but not a single soldier, policeman, or other government relief workers.  You could see the waters had receeded so heavy equipment could have been brought in at that point but not a single piece of heavy equipment in sight anywhere, either.  Nor other relief trucks with supplies.   Horrible response from the government, from what we could see from the news reports.
