A firefight erupted on 7 December 2025 in the Phu Pha Lek–Phlan Hin Paet Kon area of Sisaket province, leaving two Thai soldiers injured and prompting the 2nd Army Region to order evacuations in four border provinces. The clash began at approximately 14:15 hrs and involved small-arms fire and ending around 14:50 hrs. Thai forces have since been placed on high alert as they continue to monitor conditions along the frontier.

The Army News reported that one soldier was initially confirmed injured in the Phupha Lek area, with further details later confirming two casualties. Sgt. Anuchat Rueankham sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while Pvt. Phonchai Champajum suffered bruising and chest tightness after his body armour was struck. Both soldiers are receiving medical treatment, and no civilian injuries have been reported.

The exchange of fire follows continued monitoring operations by Thai forces amid concerns about armed activity near contested zones. The Commander of the 2nd Army Region reaffirmed that all units had been instructed to follow the Rules of Engagement (ROE) strictly throughout the encounter.

Authorities have warned that the situation could escalate further, prompting precautionary measures for border residents. The 2nd Army Region has instructed communities in four provinces adjacent to the Cambodian border to evacuate to designated shelters. Officials emphasised that these steps were taken to ensure safety should further clashes occur.

Security analysts note that adherence to the ROE suggests efforts to contain the incident and avoid broader conflict while maintaining readiness. Thai forces remain on high alert, with increased surveillance intended to detect any renewed activity on the border. The Army confirmed that updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.

Khoasod reported that military units are expected to continue monitoring the Phu Pha Lek sector and surrounding terrain closely. Authorities are preparing contingency plans in case further exchanges of fire are reported, while emergency teams remain on standby to assist evacuated residents. The situation remains fluid, and officials have urged the public to follow guidance from local authorities as developments unfold.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered the armed forces to take all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty and ensure public safety following an armed clash with Cambodian forces on 7 December 2025. The confrontation occurred in the Phu Pha Lek–Phlan Hin Paet Kon area, prompting the Second Army Region to return fire as exchanges continued. Provincial governors have been instructed to facilitate immediate evacuations for communities along the border.

According to government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat, the Prime Minister has been monitoring the situation closely since being informed of Cambodia’s initial gunfire. He directed the Ministry of Defence and military units to prioritise the security of civilians while upholding territorial integrity. A brief but intense firefight erupted between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Phupha Lek–Phlan Hin Paet Kon area of Sisaket province on 7 December 2025, leaving two Thai soldiers injured and prompting evacuation warnings for border communities. The clash began shortly after 14:15 and was brought under control within 35 minutes, although security forces maintained heightened vigilance throughout the afternoon. Authorities confirmed that the injured personnel were safely transported for further medical care.

According to the 2nd Army Region, the confrontation started at 14:15 when troops from the 13th Infantry Battalion (Rapid Deployment Company 1) came under fire from Cambodian forces using small-arms ammunition. The attack injured Sgt Anuchart Rueankham of Artillery Battalion 6 and Pvt Pornchai Champachum of Infantry Battalion 3. Thai soldiers returned fire immediately, acting “proportionately” under established rules of engagement.

At 14:16, Cambodian forces escalated by deploying a recoilless rifle, lightweight artillery system, prompting the Commander of the 2nd Army Region to place all relevant units on full readiness. Thai forces sustained their defensive response until the exchange of fire ceased at 14:50. Troops remained positioned in the area to monitor developments and prevent further escalation.

By 14:53, medical teams had transported the wounded to Don Aow Command Post for continued treatment. Reinforcement units and medical evacuation teams were deployed to stabilise the situation along the contested section of the border. At 16:17, the army confirmed that Sgt Anuchart, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, was in safe condition.

At 15:39, the 2nd Army Region issued an advisory urging residents in four border provinces, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani, to evacuate to designated shelters in accordance with local emergency plans. The precaution was taken to ensure civilian safety while authorities assessed the possibility of renewed hostilities, and has lead to long queues as residents leave affected areas.

Officials have not yet disclosed the cause of the clash, though the area has historically seen tensions arising from overlapping claims and occasional troop movements. Security forces continue to monitor the border closely, with additional patrols positioned to deter further incidents. Authorities are expected to review the afternoon’s events and may initiate discussions with Cambodian counterparts through established military coordination channels. Khoasod also reported that PM Anutin, along with the Minister of Defence, will fly to visit four Thai-Cambodian border provinces on 8;December.

A minor clash (of which there will be more as nervous soldiers finger their weapons) with carefully organized overreactions on both sides: Hun Sen & his boy need tensions to remain high to preserve their wunnerful guvamint, and Anutin & the Thai military are anxious about the likely upcoming election in February or March.

Same answer on both sides: Maintain tensions and keep the peasants on the move after every little clash.

Mrs Shrdlu is convinced that Cambodian soldiers are massed on the border and now have huge artillery pieces they got recently from the Chinese and are just waiting to lob shells on Kantharalak District.  We were advised to evacuate and left just before 5 pm Sunday for Bangkok.
