Thai Army Promises Just Response to Border Tensions

The Royal Thai Army has accused Cambodia of engaging in aggressive border actions, leading to a confrontation that resulted in injuries to two Thai soldiers. The incident occurred on December 7 at around 2.15pm in the Phu Pha Lek–Phlan Hin Paet Kon area, located in the Si Sa Ket province. Thai forces were reportedly fired upon by Cambodian troops while conducting road improvements within Thai territory.

According to Major General Winthai Suvaree, the clash erupted when Cambodian soldiers targeted a Thai engineering unit's security team. Thai forces responded by returning fire, leading to a 15- to 20- minute engagement. Winthai stated that Cambodian forces initiated the violence, seemingly aiming to inflict casualties on the Thai side.

Winthai further claimed that this event represents a pattern of behaviour by Cambodia, including allegedly placing landmines on Thai territory to hinder Thailand's demining and security operations. He criticised such actions as violations of agreements intended to maintain border peace and collaboration, which Thailand actively supports.

Thailand's response, according to the Major General, was strictly in line with international self-defence rules. The country’s use of force adhered to engagement rules and was proportionate to the threat posed by the Cambodian forces. This reflects Thailand’s commitment to defend its national security while respecting international principles, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Cambodian and Thai troops clashed, injuring two Thai soldiers.
  • Thailand accused Cambodia of initiating aggression to cause harm.
  • Thailand's response was aligned with international self-defence rules.

If the appropriate response is to open fire with all canons blazing then congratulations. It's 7:30am and all I have been hearing is Thai canons and mortars firing since 6 am.

Considering that Cambo has no airforce to speak of, seems like a waste of time and money to keep using 120mm canons... Just send a pair of F16 instead.

Mortars are a WHOLE LOT less expensive than fueling up a F-16... .Let alone all the missiles that it carries & cost big money!

F16's against a mob on the ground.... would seem a tad heavy handed..

True that F16 are more expensive then regular artillery. But they did send a pair out yesterday to target specific locations.

You don't use them to target ground personnel. You use them to hit hard targets e.i. command bunkers, artillery, weapon storages and vehicles...

I find it interesting that the burmese junta turning that Thai fishing boat to swiss cheese and taking hostages about a year or so ago received little response at all in comparison to cambodias alleged actions.
