  • What is wrong with these whining people nowadays?   They won't let mw in because I cannot produce 20,00 thb or its equivalent.   So what was she going to live on for her holiday?

  • she had to produce 20kbaht ?     immigration are being a bit over the top with this nonsense, do Thailand not want tourists

  • Yeah guys! What´s the problem of showing 20K baht?! Do you guys know how small that is, even if only going on a 3-4 day holiday? Where is the problem? Just keep some pocket change, so you can get

I wonder what will happen when the Thai govt. will require travel health insurance to enter the country or something similar to cover medical expenses.

It was hard to listen to her. Many trips to Thailand, many times in and out of Don Muang the budget carrier hub. Yet she calls it Don Mu Wang. Hard on my ears, just a blabbermouth.

Does the 20,000 baht have to be cash or in a Thai account? Can it be in your home bank account then have an ATM card?

Rediculous Thailand. Its a long time since I have been carrying around 20,000 baht. Nowadays business prefers qr code. Hasn't someone told the Thai government that we are now living in the digital world. Thailand is run by dinasaurs.

Has to be cash, but can be in any currency.

As far as I know, it is 10.000 for a single person, 20.000 for a couple

Then you know incorrectly.

Not even in a Thai bank account?

Thailand does realise we are in the 21st century now?

No, cash only. And there are no ATM machines before Immigration, so you have to have been carrying it from your departure airport, where THB is probably not available. Bring it in GBP or USD or EUR, and you lose when you exchange it. Silly rule, enforced only as a last resort to stop entry to the country.

No cash only.

Not really, although as previously pointed out, it's only used as a technical excuse to deny entry.

Personally never had departed on any international flight from any country with less than $4000usd cash in my pocket.

While the rule does exist (20k/person, 40k/family) for decades, I remember that being the rule 30 years back although I was never asked to show proof, it is a little outdated now when most people use credit cards, mobile payments, and alike. Time to update?

                   The cash requirement maybe a bit outdated  but its better than it being  required to have a smartphone and banking app    I have never been asked to show cash in over 30 years and many time have not had that amount on me

                  The immigration officers can spot a wrong'un a mile away ,  this gives them an easy and "legitimate" reason to deny entry, as "being a wrong'un" is a bit subjective and could be appealed against,  its also difficult to prove.

                    Many Thai rules seem difficult to understand to westerners at first glance, but as you become familiar with the Thai way of thinking they do make sense

You must be joking! It is now 2025.

Only RICH ones.

But bring in THB and you will have "lost" probably more when you exchanged your money in your home country or at an airport stopover on the way

Maybe she is lying.

She said if she had been allowed to go to an ATM it could have all been sorted.

More bad publicity for Thailand. Well done chaps 🤧

If this is bad publicity then I am all for it.

If you can not show a bak atm or online proof of funds inthat amount then how are yougoing to pay for hotel and such.  Hell all she needed reallywas to show that she had a credit card.

I am sorry  just too many Whines with a bad blavour

Who carries cash in 2025???

I rarely carry cash; it's a risk.

That works until the day that it doesn't.  Like when the ATM eats your card, or the bank back home decides that spending money in Thailand (or any other country you haven't called them to pre-approve) is now a suspicious activity.  Both have happened to me over the years, even recently.  Or someone hijacks your account online while you're traveling.  I always carry a few thousand $USD when I'm overseas.  Even if I can get a replacement card in a few days, that's going to be a miserable few days.

   It most likely that she had the money in the bank , just didn't have the cash to show

2025 is it really ?  I'm not quite sure what that has to do with anything but many thanks for reminding me.

           Thankfully     It is not a requirement or even necessary to own a smartphone, You and others are free to do what ever you want but should not criticise others who don't wish to do the same,    The Thai authorities obviously agree hence the cash rule

          Having witnessed many times  the queues at supermarket checkouts caused by not so smart geriatrics with their smartphones and apps.  I dread to think the of the delays that could cause at airports, things are bad enough already  without the likes of you making things worse

Exactly. It was 20,000 Baht when I first visited Thailand in 1988. That's hardly a fortune, and bringing enough money for your stay as a tourist is typical of immigration regulations in most countries.

I think the issue is the requirement to show it in cash. I mean many people from many countries don’t use cash and you can get by on tap or withdraw cash from ATM’s once in the country.

Proof of funds is entirely reasonable, requiring it to be in cash is kinda 1990’s areas.

I don’t believe she’s telling the full story TBH.

With everything digital i am sure if she brought up her bank that would have been allowed.

But again when travellig it is always nice t have some cash handy

LOL “the rule is outdated but I’m a dinosaur so it suits me”.

It’s an interesting argument Bday.

Been awhile are there no ATM before you go through customs

When people find they 're in trouble with authority and go to the media to complain, they always give just their side, leaving out pertinate details of the case.

Reading between the lines this looks like a border bouncer caught out.

1. Just carry cards for more than 1 account and more than 1 bank;

2. Let the bank know you are travelling which is easy and instant via the App;

3. if you use digital wallets a replacement digital card with any decent bank is instant and you are back up and running literally 3 mins after you lose a card or are the subject of fraud;

4. carrying thousands of dollars is entirely fine if a little unnecessary in 2025. But I understand some of the old school types prefer it.
