What's the deal with Russians and encription into the army? Is it mandatory?

At the start of the war, many wealthy Russians parents were sending their young children to Thailand for fear they would be called up. What's the latest now ?

Not much chance of the wealthy ones being conscripted. More likely if you live in the far flung regions

I talked to a foreigner sitting in ASOKE in Bangkok begging money. The sign said that he needed money for a ticket.

I offered him food and he refused that. After 1 minute i realized that this guy was a drug user only looking for cash for his next shot or pills. He was teethless and i saw in his eyes that he was totally wasted in his head.

If a person refuse a hot meal i don't care anymore.

they are all at it , nothing but scroungers, the Thai beggars are often part of organised gangs,  #i am not ashamed to say I give them mothing , one rarely sees Thais giving them money either

well that's half a day wasted arguing about a  piece of Russian trash and his disease ridden mutt.  Think I'll call it quits, might even do a bit of happy hour myself for a change,

The issue is his overstay. That apart, he was not harming anyone, and was caring for a homeless dog. No doubt he will be repatriated. Hopefully the dog is in good hands.

Hopefully, on his return to Russia the Russians have the decency to determine his medical and physical health before Hitler Putin tries to send him to the war frontline in Ukraine to die! Sad world.

No chance he is cannon fodder in waiting,   probably all just an act from a draft dodger who ran out of cash, even his mother is in on it  by "confirming his mental issues"

Right. In Prasat in surin a old thai lady allways came inside the restaurant at the market begging money.

I gave her 100 baht. The manager told me to not give this lady money because she had really big money.

But the greedy ones never get enough.

Conscription is mandatory, sending many to their deaths. You should search the net for info, not here.

Besides this poor Russian guy broke and on overstay

If the Thai authorities looked harder probably a lot more destitute foreigners doing the same in Thailand 😱

True, yet everyone has choices in life.  Moving to Thailand financially prepared should be on of them.

For many “living the dream “ turns into living the nightmare.

The Russians have not been calling  up "young children" That only happens in certain African countries as far as I am aware

I did wonder why they had not picked him up before, as in the articles, he has been in the area for months,

I did speak to him a couple of times, very polite young man with reasonable English

That is not unique to Russia,  The UK and The US for example have both employed conscription during times of warfare, and yes sadly many conscripts have died.    One subtle difference however is that few ran away like cowards at the mention of the word, rather they stayed and did their duty , paying the ultimate price

Watching the disgusting scenes of palestine protestors scrambling over the memorials erected in their memory was truly sickening

I think I know who you mean,   I give nothing   charity begins and ends at home for me.  There is plenty of money floating around Prasat. like most towns it is unsurprisingly held by the chinese,  they have the same attitude as me

I fear that may well be what happens to him.

Very true. Just like the tens of thousands of Americans who went home in body bags from Vietnam, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan and other wars.

Plenty went to Canada during the Vietnam (American) war.

Not a pacifist, but most wars, not all, but the ones you have listed  are just a waste of body bags.

This guy fled to Thailand to escape his creditors, not Putin.

Off to the front where he belongs.

Maybe this will start a trend amongst his comrades in Pattaya and Phuket.

Ah, so you’re condoning the Russian invasion of a sovereign state then.

Didn’t think that one through didya?

Whatever happened to that guy in Bangkok, homeless near the BTS?

Interesting that there is no mention of the length of his overstay,

"... his visa being nearly two months overdue".

Interesting that you didn't bother to red the OP.

You are scared by people who do not want to live the life you've been conditioned to believe is the only way. This guy might need help, but I've met others you would deem vagrants that just want to live a different way, not attached to the modern world; they move around, camp, look after themselves and do not want to be ruled over. This should be an option to everyone and not be demonised or criminalised

Until it is the day to go collect the benefits?

Why must we remain in the lands where we were born? It's such an antiquated notion.

Western countries are so broken that (some) people think immigration is a human right. It's not. If you don't bring benefit to the country welcoming you - you should go home. It's that simple.

He sounds just too much like....

THE GOOD SOLDIER SVEJK...to me.

So, when he returns to Russia, then will he fight?

But, a good soldier like Svejk never fights for the army, no matter where he goes.

Svejk is totally anti-authoritarian.

Sounds like Svejk to me.

First off, mobilisation and conscription are 2 totally different things. Millions are conscripted as was before the war. That doesn't mean mobilized. There is a long list of exemptions for even conscription. Like anyone with 2 or more kids or anyone with a university education or who is in school. And an even longer list of exemptions for mobilization.

Based on the high estimate of 700,000 troops currently on the front lines out of a total male population of around 69 million of fighting age, the percentage is roughly 1% of the fighting-age male population actually deployed in the warzone at any given time. And the frontline is even a smaller percentage than that.

The western media propagates this narrative that 10% of the Russian male population is dying in the war when not even 1% is in the war. ut yeah, wouldn't want some truth to get in the way of a good headline.

I have seen Russian vodka drinking soldiers in worse shape than this lad, he'll be sent to the frontline the moment he set foot in Russia.

I don't know, Russia is quiet on the subject, this guy could possibly be dodging the draft and won't be able to get called up when he gets home if he's unstable,

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

I suspect Thailand is full of draft dodgers from both sides, I don't blame them, Russian news today estimates 1000000 Ukrainian killed or missing in action or wounded so far, Russian numbers reported to be a lot lower but no figures mentioned.
