Seventeen Thai nationals working as online gambling administrators in Poipet were arrested after illegally crossing the Cambodian–Thai border into Sa Kaeo Province shortly after midnight on 10 December. The group, consisting of 13 men and 4 women, told officers they fled ongoing armed clashes along the border and paid 8,000 baht each to be smuggled back into Thailand. Rangers from the Burapha Task Force intercepted them during a routine patrol, preventing their escape as tensions in the area worsen.

The arrests occurred at 00:40 in a sugarcane field used as a natural crossing point near Ban Phan Suek, Tha Kham Subdistrict, Aranyaprathet District. Troops from the Aranyaprathet Special Task Force and Ranger Company 1204 were conducting night-time surveillance when they spotted the group entering Thailand illegally. Officers moved in immediately and detained all 17 individuals without encountering their Cambodian guide, who was not found at the scene.

During questioning, the detainees said they had been working as administrators for online gambling platforms in Poipet. They reported that fighting near the border had intensified, prompting them to flee for safety. The group admitted to paying 8,000 baht each to a Cambodian facilitator to guide them across the border through informal routes.

Troops said the group attempted to return during a period of heightened cross-border security linked to ongoing clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces. Authorities expressed concern that illegal crossings have increased as border residents and migrant groups try to escape volatile conditions. The lack of a captured smuggler means investigations will focus on identifying the network responsible for organising the crossings.

Daily News reported that the detainees were held temporarily at the patrol point before being transferred for legal processing. After initial interviews, all 17 were handed over to Khlong Nam Sai Police Station for further action under immigration and related laws. Security forces are continuing to tighten patrols across natural crossing points in Sa Kaeo amid persistent instability along the frontier.
