Fierce clashes between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated in the Sa Kaeo province, as Cambodian forces briefly retook Ban Khlong Phaeng and removed the Thai flag. The confrontation occurred on December 12, 2025, with ongoing exchanges in other critical sectors. The Thai Defense Ministry and Army officials reported no civilian casualties despite heavy fighting, claiming 165 Cambodian soldiers killed.

Tensions have risen along the Thailand-Cambodia border, particularly in Sa Kaeo's Ta Phraya district, following aggressive Cambodian operations. Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri highlighted the intense attacks targeting Thai positions, emphasizing Thailand's commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty. The Royal Thai Navy responded by targeting a Cambodian command center, while ground forces secured Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Khok Sung district.

Deputy spokesperson Colonel Ritcha Suksuwansaid acknowledged the setback at Ban Khlong Phaeng, attributing it to heavy Cambodian fire, including rocket launchers that thwarted Thai efforts to maintain control. The withdrawal led to Cambodian forces taking down the Thai flag, though efforts to regain control continue. Key areas such as Chong An Ma in Ubon Ratchathani and Khana in Surin remain contested, with Thai troops facing significant resistance.

The Thai Army's assessment indicates significant Cambodian losses, including 9 armoured vehicles and tanks destroyed, 68 drones neutralized, and at least 165 Cambodian soldiers killed. Despite the intensity, Thai officials stress that military operations remain focused on targets within military zones, resulting in no reported civilian harm.

Looking forward, military operations are expected to continue as Thai forces aim to regain and secure contested areas, while diplomatic avenues remain uncertain amid ongoing hostilities, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Cambodian forces briefly captured a Thai position, intensifying clashes.
  • Thai military claims significant Cambodian losses and no civilian casualties.
  • Ongoing operations focus on reclaiming key contested zones.
