Security forces have intercepted a luxury van at a checkpoint in Kanchanaburi province and seized a large consignment of ketamine valued at more than 36 million baht. The driver was arrested at the scene and has admitted he was hired to transport the vehicle to another destination.

 

The operation took place on 13 December at a joint checkpoint at the Thong Pha Phum three-way junction in Tha Khanun subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum district. Officers discovered 182 kilograms of ketamine concealed in a modified Toyota Alphard van travelling from the border area towards central Kanchanaburi.

 

Maj Gen Natthaphong Asawinwong, commander of the 9th Infantry Division and head of Surasee Task Force, said authorities had acted on intelligence indicating a large-scale drug smuggling operation from the Kanchanaburi border area into inner provinces. The operation was coordinated with Kanchanaburi Governor Warittha Sa-nguansermsri.

 

Following the intelligence report, Col Phansak Priaophanich, commander of the 29th Infantry Regiment and head of Lad Ya Task Force, ordered the deployment of joint forces. The operation involved the Lad Ya Task Force, Border Patrol Police Company 135, local administrative officials and Thong Pha Phum Police Station.

 

At the checkpoint, officers stopped a white Toyota Alphard van with Bangkok registration, which matched the description provided by informants. The vehicle was driven by 39-year-old Methi, who was travelling from Sangkhla Buri district towards Mueang Kanchanaburi.

 

Police said Methi appeared visibly nervous during questioning, prompting a search of the vehicle. Officers discovered that the van’s bodywork and interior console had been extensively modified to create hidden compartments containing the drugs.

 

A detailed search revealed 182 kilograms of ketamine with an estimated value of 36,400,000 baht concealed inside the vehicle. The seizure is considered one of the larger ketamine interceptions in the area this year.

 

During interrogation, Methi confessed he had been hired by a woman identified only as “Da”, whose surname is unknown. He said he was paid 5,000 baht to drive the van from Ban Bo Yipun in Sangkhla Buri to Mueang Kanchanaburi, where another unidentified person was to collect the vehicle.

 

Khoasod reported that authorities have taken Methi, the seized drugs and the van to Thong Pha Phum Police Station for legal proceedings. Police said further investigations are under way to identify and arrest others involved in the trafficking network.

Given the amount he claims he was paid. One would think it was a legitimate deal to drive a vehicle to another province for delivery. But without the drugs. Perhaps he had no knowledge there were drugs hidden inside. Apparently someone knew and told the cops to be on the lookout for that vehicle though. I would bet the snitch got paid more than the driver for his part in spilling the beans about the shipment.
