Bank book or bank app.....but

Featured Replies

I would like to do either or one of them but I am in overstay. They will ask for your visa when going into the bank and doing that? Going to the one I opened the account is safer as I am on overstay? Or there is another way to check my bank statement? Banks are TTB and GSB. Thank you

You better take your chance then. When is your bank cards expiring ?

Anyway, there is only one option for you, get out, take your penalty and come back later.

What is your real problem? What you need statements for? You see your saldo in the ATM using your cards?

I need to check some bank movements I don't remember I have done.

Still your main problem is overstaying! That’s what you need to deal with first if you are going in to your bank with an expired visa. You risk they temporarily close your account if you do not update your account with an valid visa.

If you do not accept the advice above, which I agree with, I suggest you withdraw all the funds from your Thai bank account/s, leaving just 1000 baht in each account to keep them open.  Live here as an overstay on those funds, then start using your foreign ATM card/s to live on once those funds have depleted.

Basically, cut the Thai banks out of your situation.

Sorry, normaly banks do not look for expired visas. The visa is importend for open a account.

You can update your bankbook for sure with no questons. Say you do not need a new book one only extra pages.

For long stays/tourists with Thai bank accounts,

KYC rules mean you need a long-term visa (Non-B, O, ED, Elite), Thai address proof (TM30/lease), a local SIM, and passport to open/keep accounts, as tourist visas (like DTV) are now generally rejected by major banks like Bangkok Bank for new accounts. If your account is frozen, update documents (passport, visa, address proof, Thai phone number) at your bank branch ASAP to restore access, as banks are cracking down on fraud and ensuring compliance.

For Opening an Account (Long Stay/Eligible)

  • Passport: Original, 6+ months validity.

  • Visa: Non-Immigrant (B, O, ED, LTR), Marriage/Retirement visas are best. Tourist visas (even DTV) are usually insufficient now.

  • Proof of Address: Certificate of Residence from Immigration (best), lease, or embassy letter.

  • Thai Phone Number: Linked to your passport (AIS, True, etc.).

  • Bank Visit: Must be in person, in Thailand.

  • Documents: Employer letter (if working), home country bank reference (sometimes).

For Existing Accounts (Frozen/Verification Needed)

  • Immediate Action: Visit your bank branch (e.g., Bangkok Bank) with all documents.

  • Required Docs: Passport, current valid long-term visa/status, proof of address (TM30/lease), Thai phone number linked to passport.

  • Tourist Visa Holders: Be prepared for your account to be suspended; you may need to withdraw funds if you can't upgrade to a qualifying visa.

  • Be Patient: Verification can take a few days, but prompt action helps.

Key Takeaways for Tourists/Short Stays

  • Tourist visas are often no longer sufficient for opening or maintaining bank accounts in major Thai banks.

  • Focus on getting a long-term visa if you plan to stay and bank in Thailand.

  • If on a short-term visa, use international cards or local e-wallets (like TrueMoney, GrabPay) for daily transactions, but be aware of limits

If you have an online account, you can live in Thailand forever never stepping foot in a bank and simply doing 100% of your transactions with the banking app, the way 99% of Thailand does it, every day. Just be sure to keep your sim card fully paid, and do not lose your phone!

How sure are you after the new regulations and terms?

You will need to verify your legal stay periodic

Just to relate my own experience with an existing Kasikorn account.

I'm now living in Laos and no longer have a Thai visa. I still have my Thai phone number and use the KBank app.The phone is coming towards the end of its life so I read I would need the face scan to set up on a new phone.

Last week I went over the border for a day to get the face scan done at the Kasikorn branch. They didn't look for a long-term visa but asked some questions to update my details on their system. No problem with me living in Laos and not having a Thai visa of any kind. I guess they could see the account transactions, which would show my monthly pensiom from the Thai SSO, Lazada/Shopee payments etc. and nothing untoward.

Face scan completed successfully and the app is working as normal.

This is the new regulations put in place, still we know new regulations takes time to be effective, if ever, TIT

That is specifically for accounts that have been frozen and for which verification is necessary and NOT an every day thing. You should calm down a little from posting on this thread, as you have form for misunderstanding regulations.

Interesting point.

The law requiring sim cards to be registered has been around for years. If one was to lose their phone, or have it stolen, they could still keep the same number, however, they would have to present their passport at a telco shop to cancel the current sim card and get a new one.

So, would the telco shop do the same as the bank/s and refuse a new sim card due to overstay????

Normally a bank will just update a bankbook by attaching some pieces of paper without the need of showing a passport; if asked, you can just say that you didn't bring your passport. However, being on overstay you should leave ASAP, and eventual re-enter.

Interesting. Have you tried this before, perhaps with the Thai missus? Example, you give her you passbook and ask her to go and update it, whilst you are not present.

I've never had someone else to update my bank book, but both banks that I use – Bangkok Bank and SCB – just staple extra pages into the bank book, when it's full; actually until I ask for a new bank book, or change passport number, which only apply to Bangkok Bank, as the have one's passport number printed in invisible ink og the last page.

I've been updating my minor daughter's bank book – her mom is the registered guardian – but it might be that the staff in the bank knows me. However, when no transaction, but just a statement update, another person might be eligible to do it; you can let your missus try.

You said this:

"Normally a bank will just update a bankbook by attaching some pieces of paper without the need of showing a passport;"

I took that to mean that if no ID needed to be presented, then anyone can update the passbook, because, basically, without showing a passport, and at least matching the passbook name with the passport name, you could be anyone, as there are no photos on passbooks.

I don't dispute this.

This was a suggestion I was going to put forward to the OP.

If you have an ATM card for the bank book in question: If you – or someone else – go to an ATM, there would normally be a selection for printing a statement or mini-statement, the last is showing the actual balance and a few last transactions.

Be aware that some banks, when updating a bank book, combine transactions if the bank book has not been updated for a while; so, there will be a period just printed as a balance of deposits and withdrawals. Bangkok Bank use for example the code: CMB. To se what happened during the combined period, you need to order a printed statement.

Yes, I know this. I have a couple of bank accounts here.

What I would like to know is, can ANYONE go into a bank branch and update your passbook on your behalf?

Sorry, I just tried to be helpful – I've already answered my knowledge about someone else updating a bank book.

Mai not everybody. If a alien man owns the book and a Thai girl likes to update it, they mai ask.

But when i like to update a book nobody ever ask me for more then the bankbook!

14 years in Thailand with three different bank accounts .. NEVER ... have had to "verify your legal stay periodic" to a bank to have my online banking account work. That being said, I agree things are changing with phone based banking, and incredibly, banks are ENDING online banking and ONLY using apps, so your point is well made that in the near future, this is going to blow up for people without a valid visa and accurate sim card registration. I think this person should just transfer their money OUT of Thailand to keep it safe until a solution is found.

So, an overstay foreigner could ask another foreigner friend to update the passbook on their behalf and it could get done.

I do not know. Mai it's about they know me.?! I do Not even know If the Look of i gave them my book. ;-)

But a few times, when my wife had some Business with the bank, they know her, she updatet my book to.

But i am still thinking that the overstayer can do a Update himselfe about the bank does not know his visastatus. .?!
