Thai police have detained a Chinese businessman, 56-year-old Liu Hongbo, and his wife in Phuket. This follows their evasion of legal responsibilities in China related to a fatal flooding at Liu's gold mine, which resulted in multiple deaths. The arrest was coordinated with Chinese authorities who had requested assistance in locating the duo.

The couple reportedly fled China after the incident, avoiding cooperation with investigators. While specific details about the flooding and the exact death toll remain undisclosed, it has been confirmed that the incident was severe, involving significant fatalities. After entering Thailand, the couple overstayed their visas by 113 days, which led to further legal complications.

Thai immigration officers successfully tracked the pair to a hospital in Phuket, where they were detained on December 23. Following their arrests, they are set to face charges in Thailand for visa violations before being deported to China. There, they will face legal proceedings concerning their role in the flooding incident.

This arrest is part of a broader pattern, as Thailand has seen a number of similar cases recently. Notable incidents include the arrest of two Indian nationals linked to a fatal nightclub fire in Goa and a Kazakh national involved in a significant fraud case. Additionally, a Chinese man was apprehended in Bangkok for his alleged role in a bid-rigging scandal involving substantial financial misconduct.

Looking forward, Liu and his wife will remain under Thai jurisdiction until legal processes regarding their immigration violations are completed. Their deportation to China is anticipated, where they are expected to confront serious charges related to the mine disaster. This case highlights the ongoing collaboration between Thai authorities and international law enforcement to address cross-border criminal activities, reported The Thaiger.
